May is ‘Youth Services’ month when Rotary around the world focus on youth services.
‘Connection to our Youth’ is one of the strategic priorities I set for my term as president, cascading from which are the specific goals of continuing support, sponsorship of youths on Rotary programmes and working with them on community-based projects. We achieve these goals, through the Youth Committee and dedicated individual members, by supporting, inter alia:
Rotaract which brings together young people in the 18-30 age group, who are developing solutions to the challenges in our community, develop leadership and professional skills and to have fun through service. We offer guidance, support and mentorship. Tessa Murphy is the current president and attends our breakfast meetings from time to time.
Interact which brings together young people in the 12-18 age group to develop leadership and organizational skills, discover the power of ‘Service Above Self’, organize community projects and above all teamwork, comradeship and fun and enjoyment whilst doing all that. District 9940 Interactors are holding an Interactors Day on 22 May in Wellington. Gillian and Darryl our long-standing stalwart supporters of this group are actively engaged with them organizing the day.
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). An intensive live-in leadership, communications and self-confidence development programme designed to develop both self-leadership and leadership of others. Earlier this year we heard from Miguel Yap, one of two youths we sponsored, who spoke to us about the course and how that helped hm overcome his fears and unleash the potential within him.
RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment). A youth leadership over a weekend long camp for year 11-13 students, designed at developing young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning. This year we supported two students. They will be speaking to us later this month.
IYM (Innovative Young Minds). A week-long residential programme designed to inspire young women in year 11-12 into the science, technology, innovation and engineering sector, where young women are underrepresented.
Rotary National Science & Technology Forum, a residential programme for all round science, maths and technology students in Year 12 who will be returning to Year 13 and are planning to study the sciences or technology at tertiary level.
Kahurangi School, year 1-8 school in Strathmore to whom we supply dictionaries and literacy books every year.
Duke of Edinburgh Special Needs Class and Individual Applications. We provide funding for applications as and when submitted and approved by the board.
Youth is our future and will continue to be a core strategic priority of Port Nicholson Rotary.
