  President's Message

It’s good to be back in New Zealand. In fact, it’s better than that. As Simon and Garfunkel said,

“Gee but it's great to be back home
Home is where I want to be.
I've been on the road so long my friend,
And if you came along
I know you couldn't disagree.”

Rosemary caught up with me in Hawai’i, after I had spent time in Chicago (wonderful place), and Denver (interesting but ultimately unexciting) and Seattle (living on its memories). As for Honolulu, it is 32 years since we were last there, and I think it will be 32 years before we go back.  We enjoyed what we saw and did, but frankly the tourist product is tired and expensive – not a good combination.

The other great coming home song is from the American Civil War:

“When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer, and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.”

Often thought to be a Confederate song (the Johnny Reb connection may be an influence), it was written by an Irish-American bandleader called Patrick Gilmore, who said he took, ”a musical waif which I happened to hear somebody humming in the early days of the rebellion, and taking a fancy to it, wrote it down, dressed it up, gave it a name, and rhymed it into usefulness for a special purpose suited to the times."

Rotaract Request

Rotaract is putting on a corporate sponsored Movie Night event on the 22nd of July, see details below, and at our last meeting we brought up the idea of involving our supporting clubs with this project. As most of our members are students we don't particularly have a wide net of business connections and although we are reaching out to Wellington businesses sometimes it helps to have a personal contact point. We were hoping you could help us with this, by distributing information about the evening to your members, giving us points of contact with businesses that might be interested or samples or products to raffle off/put in goodie bags for the event. Thank you for all your help, as it is our first real project of the year, and our first project with me as President we are hoping we can do all we can to make it a successful evening for everyone involved.

Any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated, and I am more than happy to come along to your club to chat about it with your members if you think that is appropriate.

Cheers,
Madison Faber

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.
