It’s good to be back in New Zealand. In fact, it’s better than that. As Simon and Garfunkel said,
“Gee but it's great to be back home
Home is where I want to be.
I've been on the road so long my friend,
And if you came along
I know you couldn't disagree.”
Rosemary caught up with me in Hawai’i, after I had spent time in Chicago (wonderful place), and Denver (interesting but ultimately unexciting) and Seattle (living on its memories). As for Honolulu, it is 32 years since we were last there, and I think it will be 32 years before we go back. We enjoyed what we saw and did, but frankly the tourist product is tired and expensive – not a good combination.
The other great coming home song is from the American Civil War:
“When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer, and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.”
Often thought to be a Confederate song (the Johnny Reb connection may be an influence), it was written by an Irish-American bandleader called
Patrick Gilmore, who said he took, ”a musical waif which I happened to hear somebody humming in the early days of the rebellion, and taking a fancy to it, wrote it down, dressed it up, gave it a name, and rhymed it into usefulness for a special purpose suited to the times."
In Rotary we have much to look forward to. There’s the NASA scientists evening on 20 June and then changeover on 2 July.
And at our meeting on Monday 11 June we welcome the Anglican Bishop of Wellington, Eleanor Sanderson as our guest speaker.
