Thank you to David Barnes who organized and members who volunteered for the Mary Potter Hospice street appeal on Friday 18th September. The appeal raised $76,478 for the Hospice! They were thrilled with the funds raised.

On 24th September a number of our members and I attended the Karori Rotary Business Breakfast event at the Karori park café to hear race relations commissioner Meng Foon talk about his background and role leading the work of the Human Rights Commission in promoting positive race relations in Aotearoa New Zealand. It was interesting and enlightening to hear about his humble beginnings, the child of immigrant parents from Hong Kong and ascension to mayor of Gisborne for 18 years and last year to his present appointment. His unassuming nature, effervescence and fluency in te reo māori is infectious.

Human rights as we know them today began with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. New Zealand, led by Prime Minister Peter Fraser, played a key part in the drafting of the Declaration, It recognises the inherent value of each person, regardless of background, where we live, what we look like, what we think or what we believe. They are based on principles of dignity, equality and mutual respect. I am writing about this because human rights is an integral part of Rotary’s DNA. These are the principles that drive us and on which we relate to each other, those we serve and the various projects we engage in. How we act and behave influences others and that’s how we play our part positively in making the world a better place.

Another successful social dinner, this time at Istana Malaysia on Wednesday, 23rd. About 30 of us enjoyed a nice evening. Thank you to Heather for organising.

On Thursday 24th, 10 of our members participated in the IYM quiz night – attended by around 170 people. Pleased to say we performed well and flew the Port Nic flag proudly.

Thank you to those who attended Andy Curran’s funeral and the tributes paid.

It was a busy week!

A gentle reminder- don’t forget to bring your contribution for the Food Bank on Wednesday (see article below for items).

Speaker's Report

Shona Butterworth – Inner-City Wellington

Shona, accompanied by Archdeacon Stephen King and Joanna Li, are part of the volunteer group Inner City Wellington (ICW).

It was started by Grant Robertson (now Wellington Central MP and Minister of Finance) and Mark Blumsky in 2008 along with a number of other interested volunteers including Rotarians Jean Phipps and Marten Young who were on the original committee.

From their web site - "in the interests of sustainable development and local democracy ICW seeks to serve as a progressive and influential voice of and for the residential community in the suburbs of Te Aro and Wellington Central". They often interact with the Wellington City Council and other agencies on behalf of residents in the area.

With a population of 17,500, 70% of whom are aged between 15 and 35 years of age (including 2200 students), this small geographical area has a high density and competing interests for resources.

This multi-purpose environment has residents and business sitting side by side and depending on your point of view whether you are a resident, a student, a visitor or a Wellingtonian who comes into the city from time to time, your needs are quite diverse.

The city has a number of challenges already with water, sewerage and transport issues. ICW also highlight the issue with green spaces that seem to be disappearing at a similar rate as the growth of high-rise residential developments. Asked if they were given the option of paying a higher rating to preserve and enhance these precious resources, they responded that as residents they feel that they are already paying a higher price because those resources are fewer and far between compared with other city suburbs.

The predicted growth in population over the next 30 years means that further infill and densification is inevitable – possibly matching the current population density of some high-density areas in London. Without a strategic plan that delivers sustainable development options, we could find that this level of growth only worsens the existing problems.

ICW are a strong advocate for the those who wish to live in area – if you wish to add your voice to a group who want to see Te Aro and Wellington Central grow in a way that keeps it a special place to live, study, work and play – join them.

Waterfront Clean Up
Sunday 4 October
11.00 am

We will work in teams to pick up rubbish and to show members where our rat traps are.

Meeting point to be advised. Fraser from WCC will give us a safety briefing and will supply and take away the full rubbish bags.

Please bring gardening gloves and wear any Rotary T-shirts, caps or items that show that we are Rotarians, and we will have a coffee afterwards.

Interact, Rotaract and friends and family are all welcome. We need members who won’t be picking up rubbish to take photos and to talk to passers-by about what we are doing, i.e. Show Case Port Nick Rotary.

Can someone bring two first aid kits and our Rotary banners?

An Irish Fisherman

The rain  was pouring down outside O'Connor's Irish Pub.
There standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick, with a piece of string dangling in the water.

A passer-by stopped and asked him, "What are you doing? “Fishing” , replied the old man.
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent says, “Come in out of the rain  and have a drink with me”.

In the warm ambiance of the pub, as they sip their whiskies, the gentleman, being a bit of a superior smart ass, cannot resist asking,"So how many have you caught today?"

"You're the 8th", replied the Fisherman!
