I have been a Port Nicholson club member for just under 20 years. I was the newsletter editor for a number of years in the early days of club membership, I have been sergeant many times and have been on a range of committees. I still work as an editor and publisher from which I have earned my living for a long time. I will bore anyone on most other subjects, but especially those I know a bit about such as conservation, forestry, predator trapping and living off the grid. I live with Sue, mainly at Kiriwhakapapa north of Masterton near Mt Bruce/Pukaha, although I spend a day or two a week in Wellington.
Rotary in New Zealand’s Centenary year:
News item from New Zealand 100 years ago:
Waikato times, 27 July 2021: Wellington Topics: South African Victory. The football match between the visiting South Africans and the local representatives was one subject of interest and discussion on Saturday…The weather was uninviting and probably the outlook kept away many of the people who had not reserved seats under cover, but at the kick off between 29,000 and 30,000 people were present… The game itself was disappointing… and by half-time the scores being equal, it was plain the visitors had the game fairly well in hand.
James hails from Portsmouth in the south of England. He spent his formative years there enjoying local football and eventually becoming a mad Mini Classic enthusiast and taking part in events like British Mini Day.
James made his way into the property management industry, met his wife Twyla and bought a house (or two). Twyla was keen on seeing New Zealand so they took a holiday here and in Australia for a couple of months. They fell in love with NZ and decided to move here.
Having secured a job with Harcourts in the Hawkes Bay, they sold up and shifted to a lifestyle block with sheep and wandering goats. They loved it there – despite the fact that it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. James managed to get involved in all sorts of things, from local fire fighter volunteer to being ‘the agent’ in a reality TV programme espousing the virtues of moving from North America to NZ.
Harcourts was an awesome experience and while there his team flourished and won awards but eventually he was offered a role in tropical Wellington.
Twyla and James sold up again and shifted to Wellington to work for Just Paterson and James ran their newly established Property Management business unit Just Property. This has been a successful move and the unit has increased in staff and managed properties several fold.
James and Twyla are now proud homeowners in Karori and there is a Mini Classic sitting the garage waiting for some love and attention from James. James has been a member of our Rotary Club for the last 6 months and has enjoyed being involved with our events, is also looking forward to being involved with the Goal Setters early next year. Welcome aboard James!

RNZWSC has underwritten the NZ$5000 cost of transporting these to Fiji and is now asking for support to cover this cost.
