Surviving as a professional theatre in New Zealand
Jonathon is Chief Executive and is driving a strategic refresh of BATS Theatre in Wellington. Recently he worked at Fortune Theatre as Artistic Director after nearly a decade and a half of leading actor training at UNITEC and Toi Whakaari NZ Drama School. Jonathon has employed a strong and diverse range of skills in a variety of contexts. These range from exploring marae based theatre in the early nineties, award winning stage work, playing characters on screen, building company environments, mentoring emerging artists, reviewing on radio and shaping development in advisory or governance roles. He’s relished the opportunity to keep learning while championing new voices and perspectives.

Rotary Christmas Puddings

Three (identical) webinars are planned, hosted by RI Director Jessie Harman to update us on what has happened since the vote, and what the next steps are. Presenters will be Co-Chairs PDG Ingrid Waugh and PDG Peter Frueh. Questions can be asked.

Join our Rat Trapping Team!
Are you interested to join a group of dedicated volunteers who check the predator free Rat traps around the Wellington Waterfront? It is a relatively easy job, and only takes a couple of hours, once every couple of months or so. If you are interested, even on a casual basis, please contact Rick
Perambulation Opportunity
Peter is planning a trip to Patuna Chasm, a stunning walk through the bush, chasm and Ruakokoputuna river. See the beauty of this native bush and limestone gorge. Volunteer Opportunity
Round the Bays will be held on 19 Feb 2023 and relies on volunteers for several roles, including registrations on the day, handing out packs and marshalling on the course.
RCPN will receive $25 for every club member who volunteers.

From the president...
With ‘Youth are our future’ being frequently cited, it was definitely encouraging to hear the three young people speak at last week’s Meeting. Rachel Baker and Eli Sumner spoke of their year as co-Presidents of Interact and Nicole Cook spoke encouragingly of the reinvigoration of Rotaract. Through ‘piggy-back’ activities and regular informal style meetings in bars, a growing number of members are becoming involved. As well as wanting to be more involved in our activities and those of other Clubs in our District Network, Nicole spoke of interest in our list of mentoring skills. This will be discussed further. It is great to have Nicole as a regular and engaged attendee at our monthly Network Meetings.
Special thanks to Darryl for attending Interact Meetings and being our Liaison at them, and to Paula who has offered to share this role next year – as she had done a few years ago. The next presentation on RYPEN, RYLA and various other Rotary Youth programmes will be made in March. Many thanks to Steve Lawton for all his work in coordinating these programmes.
In the meantime, the ‘Lifting the Lid’ programme is progressing well with special thanks to David
Shackleton and Richard Brodie. I look forward to the meeting organised by David, of representatives of our and the other Clubs involved from our Network and hear feedback from the participating schools. A plan for 2023 will be developed. The recent reports of the mental health state of our youth, especially since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, paint the picture of the urgency of this valuable assistance.
This week’s speaker, Jonathon Hendry, plays a wonderful and vital role in providing opportunities and mentoring for young people in the arts through his position as Chief Executive at BATS.

Dinner – though hope most can attend that! Sleigh bells ringing in the central city this weekend make Christmas seem very close!
Our Club had the pleasure of hearing from four young people on 23 November, who we support in various ways - through Rotary Clubs Interact and Rotaract, as well as an individual sponsered to attend International Orienteering Competitions in July.
Linda Wellington took us on a tour of the Galapagos Islands at our last meeting on 17 November. This was a boat trip which involved sailing around the significant islands in the group.
She intrigued and educated our club, holding our attention captive with her presentation.
