Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 17 May 2018
Past President Howard Tong as acting president.

There was buzz in our meeting this week as we met for the first time since the successfully run Charity Auction.  I am sure, once all the finalising of the event is complete, we will see the true return for Wgtn Free Ambulance and Malaghan Institute.  Both fantastic causes and their partnership with Port Nicholson is such a successful one.  The Club acknowledged the great team, led by David and fronted by Ian, that made this event exceed all expectations.

It was good to welcome visiting Rotarian Graeme Shoebridge from Waiheke Club and Madison Faber, our incoming Rotaract President, who enthused the meeting with her plans for the new Rotary Year.

Sue Bennett also joined us for breakfast, having made a significant contribution to the auction, and expressed an interest in meeting the Club members over breakfast.

Our thoughts go to Peter and Barbara Whittington and family following the loss of Peter’s much loved father.

I’m sure we will all support Bev Wells, our incoming President, at next week’s meeting when she outlines her vision and coat ourClub Forum.

Howard

President's Message

Report from Rotary One

The third Tuesday of each month is committees’ day at Rotary One in Chicago. This means that the various committee of the club meet at lunchtime as if it were a club meeting, socialise, eat the buffet and hold a committee meeting.

I sat in on the International Committee which heard two interesting presentations. One was from a Rotarian from Quito in Ecuador who was seeking $100 000 in funding to help re-house a village that had been destroyed in a big earthquake there in April 2016.

The second was a report on a project in Senegal which seeks to change the cultural behaviour of some groups of local people regarding child marriage, domestic violence and female genital mutilation.
The Tostan programme is focussed on the local people coming to their own conclusions about the undesirability of these practices and therefore resolving not to undertake them. The speaker, who works in domestic violence in Chicago, made the point that in the West we focus on curing domestic violence by stopping it. This programme seeks to prevent its ever happening in the first place.

Rotary One has 141 members in the club, plus 31 honorary members, and one of their landmark events is coming up: Woman of the Year for which they have a sold out lunch of 200. The club meet in the Union League Club building, this being a leading private club in Chicago which offers gym facilities, two restaurants and multiple events.  Members are professionals and can meet by occupation (lawyers, IT, banking etc) or by interest (travel, sports and the like)

Rotary One seems to have no real connection with Rotary Headquarters which has its own building. I counted about 40 members at today’s session which covered five committees. It was all very informal. A brief welcome, no pledge of allegiance or singing of the national anthem – both of which have been standard at other US Rotary clubs I have attended, and then some announcements at the end.
The six visiting Rotarians were welcomed, and all of us got to speak briefly, and President Conor gave me a Rotary One banner. I need to send him one.

Club Member Jeff Lee:  “Looking Forward”

By his own admission Jeff is the 4th oldest member of Port Nicholson Rotary. This doesn’t seem right given his youthful looks!  Entitling his presentation this morning as ‘Looking Forward’ he felt he wanted to explore what his future holds rather than dwelling on the past. I was hoping to hear the story behind the gumboot line-up at every auction, which is more about the past. This was explained later – thank you Jeff.

Jeff has calculated his life expectancy as being anywhere between 88 and 92 and given he retired in 2001 – he estimated he would have to finance his retirement for at least 30 years! Not sure that my maths is up to this … rather daunting.

Having spent 42 years working for Bata, he regards his boss Thomas Bata, the son of the founder, as an inspirational leader. His job took him to various parts of the globe and he eventually arrived in New Zealand with his wife and family in 1980. They decided to put their roots down.

Family is of paramount importance to Jeff and he regards spending quality time together annually as top priority. His mantra – if you can call it that – is long-term future encouragement. He maintains contact with his wider family who are all offshore and is committed to keeping the younger family members in touch with family and family history.

Jeff has written and published two volumes of his family history. He passed the impressive looking books around and suggested to members they should consider writing their own histories for the generations to come.

He joined Rotary in 2001-2002. Committed to community work, Jeff volunteers at the Wellington City Mission, the Royal School of Music, and Ed Aid. He has an ongoing interest in education, particularly in developing countries, using New Zealand’s special advantages. Ten years ago he helped build a school in Tanzania – his work in building other schools continues.

Jeff’s association with Bata did not stop at retirement – hence the gumboots – he holds a non-executive directorship and still travel to Kenya and the Congo on their behalf. He is proud that Bata is still manufacturing gumboots saying that Bata has the edge over China with excellence and cost. Their main focus is in industrial gumboots where they hold the market niche.

Thank you Jeff – it was a real pleasure to have you share your life and work with us.

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.
