From the President..
This time last week, Cyclone Gabrielle was imminent. Now we have seen through the media – or in person – what some have the apocalyptic-like destruction of their homes, possessions, livelihoods and so much more on personal levels. You may have seen the bus load of goods being taken up to Hawke’s Bay. Generous and well meaning though these are, it is now financial assistance they need. With power out, equipment unable to work, many have not been able to function in this growing cashless society. In the ‘post-mortem’ the event, the reliance on door-knocking, hard copy bulletins of vital details, information via transistor radios, and cash, cannot be denied.
The same applies in Turkey. Although the exponential curve of the 6.1 to 7.8 on the Richter scale does create more substantial effects, it makes our, at times ‘painfully pedantic’ Earthquake Codes, suddenly seem essential. As for the destruction in the Ukraine, it is simply inane and unfathomable.
Donations for all these are ‘on our radar’ and will be discussed at the Board Meeting. Do see the item in the Bulletin regarding personal donations. Through the Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS) funds are sent directly overseas, for distribution to the intended recipients. As it is registered with Charities Services, for any donations over $5, a 1/3rd rebate can be claimed via IRD by the donor (which can re-gifted through Supergenerous).
Thank you to Anne and the RCPN team of Marshalls for around the Bays on Sunday – and the $25 per person the Club will receive. Combining this with our Parking income, we are accumulating additional funds which we will discuss to which of the various deserving causes we will disseminate them.
For some fun, there is still a call out for assistance at The Big Dig which AG and President of the Mt Victoria Club, Carol Green, mentioned last week. To be held on Saturday 4 March on the Freyberg Beach (by the Pool), Oriental Parade, there is a different type of marshalling and assistance required. Alternatively, bring your children or grandchildren so that they can dig for the tags and collect their prizes!
The next night, there is already one team from Port Nicholson registered to participated in the Quiz Night to raise funds towards addressing Mental Health issues among young people. Much appreciation for the clearly expressed presentation by David and Richard at the last Meeting on Lifting the Lid, reflecting the importance of this project. Two members of the Club reminded us that such issues are not confined to young people.
Because of the weather, DG Marilyn Stevens postponed her visit to the Club. It will be rescheduled.
Meantime, sun seems to be shining on most of the country, which will help with the clean-up of silt and so much more. Best of wishes to them and enjoy the return of summer!
