Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 16th August 2018
  President's Message

16 August 2018

The Club’s Board members met this week. Here is a brief summary of the main points:

  • Stroke Awareness Day confirmed for Saturday 6 October 10am-2pm. No need for the club to provide trained volunteers.
  • Police Vetting requirements if engaging with our youth (under 18 yrs). Mike is our Youth Protection Officer and will update us on requirements at a club meeting soon.
  • Member subscription rate increase – separate email coming out to full members
  • Subsidising club meeting costs for guests/visitors. The Board wants to take consistent approach so that it is fair to all. You need to know this for desk duty or when inviting visitors.
The Board decided as follows:
  • Youth (under 18 yrs), school students and parents/caregivers accompanying them – no cost.
  • Rotaractors $10/club meeting
  • Potential members – first meeting free. Members are welcome to subsidise further meetings if they wish but not expected.
  • Benefactors e.g. for cheque presentations – free up to 2 guests
  • Guest speakers – no cost
  • All other guests – standard cost of meeting.
  • If you have an ‘extra’ coming along to a meeting, please inform the Treasurer, Desk duty officers and President by email so that we can plan ahead for this. If there are several subsidised guests at one meeting, we may need to adjust the cash float for the day. It also allows the desk duty officers to prepare name cards in advance and to be prepared when greeting guests.
  • Photographs – a preference for action photos, Rotarians in action, not posed photos of smiling Rotarians handing over cheques or goods. Nice as they might be for us, more photos of the end product or benefit being demonstrated is more interesting to potential members and what we make happen!
  • We completed a 6-month review of the change to our meeting day. Unfortunately we did lose some members and we are aware Mondays do not suit everyone, however, the hotel situation hasn’t changed from last year and until it does, we cannot consider another change. We will continue to monitor this. Percentage attendance rates are generally consistent with last year.

A reminder to click on the notice links for booking in to help with the street appeal coming up or go direct to the website.

Looking forward to a weekend of Rotary activities coming up – the waterfront market and Wellington on a Plate!
Enjoy whatever you choose to do.

Speaker's Report

H.E. Ambassador Seung Bae Yeo spoke to us on Moon Jae-in’s Policy of the Korean Peninsula.

Seung Bae Yeo started by talking about the recent developments including the Winter Olympics.  Many will be aware that the philosophy of the Olympic movement is for Peace so this was very symbolic.  There was also an Inter-Korean Summit meeting and the Summit with President Trump in Singapore.   Expectations have therefore been rising for peace in the region.   The new administration in South Korea wants a peaceful resolution to the war of words between North Korea and the US post the acceleration of nuclear testing by North Korea.   South Korea has been an initiator of this process with Moon Jae-in wanting four things; 1. No military pressure, 2. no seeking a regime change in North Korea, 3. No observing of North Korea and 4. No reunification.   No. 1 is the biggest game changer - the request of North Korea to relinquish nuclear testing.

The acceptance of a North Korean delegation of athletes and government officials to the Winter Olympics in South Korea was monumental giving a presence of a combined Korean team.   The expectation is for another combined Korean team to participate in the Asian Games in August in Indonesia.   The reunion of some families (100 people on each side of the border) split during the Korean war has also been a step toward peace and has been welcomed by both side of the border.  The stepping over the border in the military zone by both Presidents Kim Jung-in and Moon Jae-in was also a major signal toward peace and a common goal of being nuclear free.  The DMZ is a major goal to turn the military zone in a Demilitarisation Zone.

The Singapore Joint Statement between the US and North Korea is to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and to return Prisoner of War remains from the Korean War to the US.   Further meetings between both Presidents are being scheduled and keeping the communication going is important.  The importance of other countries such as with NZ to maintain the relationship with South Korea where trade and other support will assist in the goals for the region.  More importantly of course is to maintain and strengthen relations with China as this country is the biggest influence in the region.

A question from the floor promoted a bit of history on Kim Jong-un; Seung Bae Yeo explained that Kim Jung-un lived in the West as a teenager so understands what life in the West is like and appreciates that sanctions need to be removed in order to avoid things like the famine and flooding of the mid 1990’s.  He also realises that he will be unable to build the North Korean economy for the people of the country unless he co-operates with the regions leaders and the rest of the world.   Seung Bae Yeo was positive on the region and hopeful that a respectful resolution will be found and that the Policy Ideals of Moon Jae-in will be achievable.

Volunteers needed for Refugee support

Every couple of months, new families of refugees arrive in Wellington and are helped to settle in by the Anglican Cathedral, other community groups and our Interact Club, by providing supplies for their household when they arrive. The Club has been helping with this by providing the pantry supplies for one of the households.
For the upcoming round of families in October, the Club would like to try providing all the household items provided for one of the families. This includes 17 kitchen items, 21 general household items, and the 20 pantry items we have provided before. As long as they are in good condition, many of these can be spare items from your own homes, or charity shops.

The Community Service Committee would like to invite club members to volunteer to source one or more of these items. To pick an item, Click on Sign Up to view available slots and book yourself directly online via the club's website.

This is a great way to get to know other Rotarians as well as a very enjoyable evening.
Here’s how it works:
  • You can register as either a host or guest, and we will arrange some dinner parties;
  • If you are a guest, we will need to know any dietary restrictions;
  • If you are a host, we will need to know how many guests you can entertain;
  • During the week before the event, we will confirm with the designated hosts the number of guests and any dietary constraints.
On Friday 21 September, we will send guests the address (but not the name) of their host.

While this is not strictly a fund raising event, we suggest a voluntary koha of $30 per guest to go to Rotary Foundation (tax receipts will be provided).

If you are interested, please register on the RCW website, e-mail or call me at eades.geoff@gmail.com or 021 216 8378

Dear Rotarians

I am asking your assistance for INTERACT who are joining with the International Committee at Wellington College to run a QUIZ night in early September. This will raise funds for the Blue Dragon Charity in Vietnam.

The Blue Dragon Charity rescues children off the street from slavery. Both Wellington College and Wellington Girls College students have visited the charity in Vietnam, and the young founder has recently visited New Zealand.

INTERACT need your assistance with information on those organisations (not RCPN) that could be approached to support their International service project with goods or donations towards the funding of the quiz night.

Please talk to or email Gillian Robertson urgently !!
Thank you in anticipation
