By any measure the Goal Setter Awards on 10 March was a resounding success. A fantastic turnout, overwhelmingly deserving recipients and an informative and entertaining guest speaker.
The following comment from District Governor Gillian Jones:
Another remarkable event with deserving recipients whose lives will be enhanced by Rotary.
I join in congratulating the organising team and I especially want to congratulate the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson as a whole for the wonderful work you continue to do broadly within our community”

Very special thanks to Jane, Richard, Jeff and Paula for all the hard work in putting this event together and making it, yet again, a premier and spectacular event for Port Nicholson Rotary. Thank you also to the 35 members and spouses/partners who attended and the various parties who generously purchased a table (some 2) to help make it a success. John Bishop has submitted an article for the District Bulletin on the event which is attached elsewhere in the bulletin.

On Sunday morning about 30 members from Port Nicholson and the clubs from the Hutt area participated in the Baton Relay walk to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in New Zealand. The walk started at Avalon Park and ended at the Fig tree café in Heretaunga for a well-deserved lunch. My iPhone says we covered 12 kms and 18,350 steps! Thank you to members who came along and Anne, Linda and their team for organizing this commemorative and invigorating walk and the baton’s ongoing journey to arrive in Carterton for the start of the District conference on Friday.

Rotary District 9940 has committed to providing $400,000 towards the Children’s Hospital project by March 2022.  It is currently close to $100,000 raised leaving a balance of some $300,000 within the next year.  These funds will be used to outfit two specially designed parent/ Whanau support areas for which the District has naming rights.  These areas will include play spaces, kitchens, and lounge areas. The funds raised to date include the $10,000 donated by Port Nicholson in November last year. We will make further donation following the charity auction in May.

District 9940 has set up a special ANZ bank account ‘Children’s Health Trust’ - 01 0527 0714560 00
into which individuals can also make donations. If you wish to donate please do so. Remember every dollar you donate entitles you to a tax credit of up to 33% depending on your individual tax rate. So for every $100 donated you effectively only pay $67. You may wish to consider this as you approach your YE 31 March 2021 tax year. If you wish a receipt please email Adrienne Murray, chair of the Trust - amconsultingnz@gmail.com

Goal Setter Awards Presentation
10 March 2021

The three award winners nervously waiting beforehand with Jane Paterson
Proud winners afterwards - Preston Lyons, Ainsleyana Puleiata, and Wesley Tanuvasa with President Mike
and Dr Ashley Bloomfield
The award winners with two of past winners Kahui Tihore and Melissa Dol who gave the opening and closing thoughts.

Three moving stories of adversity overcome were presented at the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson’s  Goalsetter Awards ceremony held in Parliament’s Banquet Hall on Wednesday 10 June.

The Goalsetter Awards are presented annually to tertiary students who have faced and overcome significant hardship or adversity in their lives and have gone on to achieve their goals. The awards carry a scholarship of $3 500 each.

Ainsleyana Puleiata tore her left ACL ligament playing rugby and then again playing netball but has bounced back to make the NZ under 21 netball squad. She was the chief carer for her family during lockdown with her mother at the bedside of her new baby who has heart problems and Down’s syndrome. She still completed her degree in health, worked part time, coached young athletes, and helped at her church. She says she learned resilience and perseverance.

Preston Lyons’ parents cared for two severely handicapped children as well as their own. In 2017 Preston’s promising career was ended by a car crash which left him struggling physically and mentally. He cried every day with the struggle of being alive but jobless. Treatment by a psychologist led to a return to university to study psychology and this year he will undertake studies at Honours level. He has a special friend with autism whom he helps through IHC’s friendship programme.

Wesley Tanuvasa was working towards a career in investment banking, but in 2019 his father had a stroke and went into care, his sister left the family, and his mother died. The family had no income and large debts. Wesley became the family breadwinner as well as taking the physical rehab of his father. He took a job as a tutor, continued to study, including at summer school and this year he will finish his commerce degree and will be looking for an internship in finance.

After the presentation of awards an address was given by Dr Ashley Bloomfield, Director General of Health followed by questions from the floor.

The rabbit is always jumping but it lives for 2 years and the turtle that doesn’t exercise at all, lives  400 years.
So,
