Speaker - John Pearson
British Deputy High Commissioner to NZ
John Pearson is the British Deputy High Commissioner to NZ. He previously was UK Ambassador in Laos where he spent four years. As a diplomat, John Pearson believes in disrupting the status quo at times to improve a situation, and that may involve questioning others instead of just being ‘polite’.
He is ex Nottingham University and Kings College London.
John is a runner, keen cyclist, and has a strong focus on sustainability.
NICEF Aotearoa has recently published a flagship report titled ‘The State of the World’s Children’ highlighting the urgent need to support the mental health and wellbeing of children and youth.
The following paragraph highlights the enormity of the present situation.
“In Aotearoa mental distress among youth has increased significantly over the last decade to the extent that around 21 percent of adolescent boys and girls aged 10 to 19 now live with a mental disorder. Support for their wellbeing must continue to be prioritised and it will require a whole society approach to ensure that all children and whānau get the support they need!”
Supporting youth mental health is one of the main themes of this year with ‘Lifting the Lid’ one of 3 significant causes to benefit from the coming Charity Auction. The Projects Committee is working extensively on all fronts to ensure the success of the evening and a very big thank you to our members who will be alongside on this significant occasion.
And continuing the theme of mental health, it is the Samaritans National Appeal day on Saturday and Jo and Joy are very kindly helping Jill and me collect at Chaffers New World.
The winds of early spring are very much a feature at the moment! So look forward to seeing a large number of happy faces again next Wednesday as we listen to the British Deputy High Commissioner.

Yon Yi has a group show opening and painting workshop.
The opening date coincides with the Charity Auction event. However if you'd like to visit the exhibition any other time, she is happy to host you~

With the summer season coming on it is time to put your hand up and commit to one or more of these planned trips. Bookings need to made very soon if we are going to secure the desired dates for the Patuna Chasm walk and the Nydia Bay multi day hike. I know they both seem a long way off at the moment but popular destinations like these book up very quickly.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) 2024
Applicants are sort from suitable young people (18-24 years) for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award in the latter half of January 2024.
RYLA is a five-day intensive, high energy, challenging, residential programme to develop young
leaders from District 9940. The RYLA programme recognises, encourages and educates current and future leaders by offering them an intensive leadership experience with the cooperation of
community and culture organisations, businesses, local and national leaders.
RYLA is an invaluable programme that brings together individuals to harness creativity, diversity,
inspiration, energy and leadership to cultivate personal growth and develop meaningful personal
change and harnessing their leadership potential.

Matt Farrar and a group of like-minded businesspeople, calling themselves Trails Wellington, who love mountain bike riding, (including members of the Drury family) approached the council about generating an asset for the city making use of the town belt - the idea is to create a commuter biking network off road.
