“Together we make a Difference”
Kia ora

Congratulations to Lea Hermon and Ken Rayner, co-presidents of Interact Club of Port Nicholson, in being inducted as Honorary members at our breakfast meeting on 29 July. We are proud to be associated with two inspiring young people, the talent and leadership skills they bring. Thank you to our Youth Director Anne, her committee and in particular, Gillian and Christopher, for their unwavering support of our Interactors.

Rotary Leadership Institute is holding a Rotary 101 learning and information workshop session on 3 September at the Avalon Fire Station. It is an opportunity for you to learn about Rotary, what it can do for you and what you can do for Rotary. It will be particularly useful for our newer members but also an opportunity for long standing members to get their battery recharged! I will be sending out an email to all members on this and how to register.

Our ambulance has arrived in Apia and is presently in the process of being cleared by customs. Gratefully, Jenners Worldwide Freight and the shipping company reduced their respective charges by around $1,000 because it was a Rotary project. A letter of thanks has been sent to Jenners. What we have achieved together is a fitting example of our vision ‘together we make a difference’

in this bulletin you will see a link to a Radio NZ news article about Kriddles Roberts, the recently appointed president of Waitakere Rotary Club. It is a truely inspiring story and an example of the changing face of Rotary. I urge you read the article and listen to the audio link.

See you all on Wednesday. Lou Sanson, Director General of DOC, is our guest speaker.

ngã mihi

Paul Atkins –  Zealandia CEO

Zealandia – ‘the valley
that changes a nation’

When you walk into the visitors Centre at Zealandia on the wall you will see:

'The future can no longer be What is going to happen? It is What are we going to do?’ – Henry Bergson.

Paul’s presentation touched on what they have been doing at Zealandia and how it has impacted on our region. In summary Zealandia’s:
  • place in environmental transformation from a handful of pairs of birds of a number of species, towards abundance spread across the region;
  • place in social transformation – as an influential player in the ecosystem that has supported the Predator Free Wellington initiative;
  • place in health and wellbeing transformation – There is compelling evidence that natural spaces promote the mental wellbeing of Wellingtonians. People who spend more time in nature show lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In most cities people are having fewer, and poorer experiences of nature. We are bucking the trend in Wellington with around half of all Wellingtonians participating in some form of environmental volunteering.
  • place in economic transformation – Zealandia was recognised by TIME in 2019 as one of the World’s TOP 100 Greatest Places. Paid admissions have significantly increased over the last 4 years and this year they welcomed 145,000 visitors. But the focus now has moved from quantity to quality, with the offering focussed on specialist tours rather than just visitors through the gate. Zealandia has contributed over $90m of economic value to Wellington in 4 years.
However, Zealandia hasn’t been immune to the impacts of Covid-19. They have had to trim expenditure and realign budgets on the expectation of zero international visitors over the next year or so. But they are still guided by their 500-year vision with generational strategies:

1st generation: establishment (1995-2015)
2nd generation: extending influence and impact (2016-2035) as captured in their document Living with Nature Tiaki Taiao, Tiaki Tangata. Zealandia will be a place that transforms biodiversity, people and knowledge, and through this transforms our capacity for living with nature – and in doing so, creating:
3rd generation: impact – RESTORING OUR FUTURE
It is great to be part of the Zealandia family.
