I would like to share extracts from articles I read in recent Rotary publications.

Rotary like many other organisations have recognised education as a pathway out of poverty and significant gains have been made in increasing access to learning in communities around the world.

Covid-19 is threatening to erase much of those gains.

According to the UN, more than 91% of students worldwide have been impacted by temporary school closures- close to 1.6 billion students affected. There is now concern that the pandemic’s impact on education will continue long after the development of a vaccine posing significant challenges in education.

We should be thankful that in Aotearoa New Zealand we have not been affected as badly as other countries around the world. Containing Covid-19 is paramount and we all have a part to play in that effort to ensure that our children continue to go to school every week.

DG Gillian Jones wrote in her latest report to the District:
Many Clubs have a meeting focus rather than a service / project focus. Meetings need to be seen as the ‘tip of the iceberg’ in terms of Club experience. It’s what goes on beneath that that is the heart of the Club.

At Rotary Port Nicholson we subscribe to that mantra.  Whilst we enjoy our fellowship and social encounters at our breakfast meetings, it’s the service we offer to the community, charities and other worthwhile causes that keeps our hearts pumping! We manifested that last week with the foodbank collection and this weekend with the waterfront clean-up and last minute opportunity to man the car parks at the Harbourside market. Thank you to Steve and John for organising.
Your parents taught you to be nice to people. They were right – and here’s why if you click on this link.    https://www.rotary.org/en/why-being-kind-is-more-important-than-ever

Remember our meeting on 7 October is an informal one at Leuven Belgium Beer Café in Featherston St, commencing at 7am - they are opening early specially for us!. If you have not yet registered on the email sent out by Peter Whittington please do so. It should be an enjoyable morning

Stay safe

Dr Barry and Rosemary Wards – Walking Te Araroa Trail

The Te Araroa Trail marked in red.

Barry and Rosemary Wards talked about walking Te Araroa Trail and a written report cannot do it justice. They shared just a sample of the many photos they took and the stories they gathered on their North Island leg of the Trail. They started their 12 week adventure on 16th December 2018 at Cape Reinga - the beginning of a 1700km walk. The South Island is a little shorter at about 1500km.

"These boots were made for walking......"
(Barry wore these boots the whole journey!

Lots of preparation went into the trip, dehydrating meals and sending them to collection points along the way. This meant they were well fed, but despite the high-density nutritious meals, they both lost several kilograms. They bought light gear, tents, packs and cooking gear to minimise the weight they had to carry.

Barry & Rosemary's packs and their tent (yellow)

They shared a number of the highlights – stunning scenery, generous New Zealanders, many of them welcoming walkers with fresh produce and of course 12 weeks of incredible memories. There were some lowlights – a 16 km track of deep sticky mud, and some very hot days but on balance an extraordinary experience.

This was an inspiring presentation that would encourage many of us who enjoy walking to take on at least some sections of the Trail. Barry and Rosemary have the South Island leg in their sights at the end of 2021.

Waterfront Clean Up
Sunday 4 October
11.00 am

A happy group of Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors busily collected rubbish for over an hour and then enjoyed a welcome coffee and snack afterwards.
Six Interactors joined us today and were a great asset to the team.

The leaders Mike and Steve, and Nicole and Tessa (Rotaract).
