Tēnā koutou

Greetings from Queenstown! I am writing this sitting down in the comfort of the sofa looking out at the magnificent view of magical lake Wakatipu. It’s the third largest and longest lake in Aotearoa, carved out by glaziers 15,000 years ago. Its name comes from Maori legend which translates to ‘trough of the giant’. It rises and falls 20cm every 30 mins and that is said to be the heartbeat of the giant! It was my first flight since lockdown in March and certainly was an experience, especially when the glasses fogs up every time I breathed out with the mask on- made reading a challenge!
Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori
Maori language (Te Reo Maori) week has been celebrated every year since 1975. This year it runs from 14-20 September (14-20 Mahuru). Its purpose is to recognise Maori as an official language of Aotearoa, to foster and promote its use and to strengthen us as a nation.

‘Strength for an endangered language comes from its status, people being aware of how to support revitalisation, people acquiring and using it and from the language having the right words and terms to be used well for any purpose’

Make an effort to learn a dozen Māori words before the end of the week. You may choose to label rooms and furniture in your house, items in the fridge or find out how to greet in Māori. You can get instant translations for almost every word at www.maoridictionary.co.nz. Also check out www.tewikiotereomaori.co.nz

Our social committee has been busy!
  • Peter has organised a beer and burger for lunch at Fortune & Favours Brew Bar, Leeds St on Friday 18 September 12.30-2pm. If you are keen please register on the email he sent out
  • if you fancy the epicurean delights of Malaysia, Heather has organised dinner at the Istana Malaysia in Allen St on Thursday 23 September 6.30-9pm. Please register if you wish a fun night out

See you all on 16 September which is also our AGM

Please mark in your diary - 7th October our meeting (informal) will be at Leuven Bar

Stay safe

ngã mihi

Guest Speaker Report

Simon Howard: Owner of Cyber Security Firm ZX Security

Simon introduced himself by saying ‘my team hacks stuff’. His clients engage him to find vulnerabilities in their websites, mobile applications and internal networks.

When we are working remotely, as a number of us are, we expose our workplace system if:
  • we use weak passwords that are predictable, easily able to be connected to us like family members names or Password1!
  • we don’t use two factor authentication. This means for example, when logging into internet banking a SMS to your phone provides a code to authenticate the transaction. This can be enabled for Facebook, Dropbox, Linkedin;
  • we use an out-of-date operating system which creates much greater vulnerability i.e. keep updating your system;
  • our systems are not patched: i.e. systems that connect to each other are not kept updated;

Case studies and insights
Simon shared some interesting and expensive war stories, demonstrating some of the challenges businesses face to secure their systems, their client information and their Intellectual Property (IP).
Attackers come in a range of shapes and with different agendas. The state funded nation states are focused on securing IP such as data and the GCSB has an annual report available for review of this activity in New Zealand. Targeted opportunists use easily available tools to find passwords and encrypt files for which they can demand payment. For many entities, having their files shared with the world is as much a risk as a ransom demand.

Additional security controls we can address in our own IT systems.
A $3000 video card can guess 38million passwords a second! Simon recommends passwords are at least ten characters long and include special symbols. So you only have to remember one password, he recommends using a password manager, software that can be installed – e.g. LastPass; KeyPass. These are only accessible using a single password so if you forget the key to your password safe you are in trouble. Back it up!
  • Biometrics – fingerprint identification are an excellent defence:
  • Using a good operating system (Windows 10), ensure remote systems are patched and updated;
  • Install uBlock Origin to gets rid of the ads;
  • When doing internet banking ensure your browser is in private mode. This will disable plugins that might have been installed. [When you go to a new tab or window, the private mode option is available];
  • Have 2 Factor Authentication turned on;
  • Backup backup backup!

Waterfront Clean Up
Sunday 4 October 11.00 am

We will work in teams to pick up rubbish and to show members where our rat traps are.

Meeting point to be advised. Fraser from WCC will give us a safety briefing and will supply and take away the full rubbish bags.

Please bring gardening gloves and wear any Rotary T-shirts, caps or items that show that we are Rotarians, and we will have a coffee afterwards.

Interact, Rotaract and friends and family are all welcome. We need members who won’t be picking up rubbish to take photos and to talk to passers-by about what we are doing, i.e. Show Case Port Nick Rotary.

Can someone bring two first aid kits and our Rotary banners?

The Innovative Young Minds (IYM) Programme
The programme is designed to encourage young women to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing.

It's a programme that that our club actively supports as part of our youth support goals. This year we jointly sponsored with IRANZ two on-line sessions to IYM. Karen Oldfield our speaker this week was one of the role-model young women who contributed to our sessions.

Covid-19 has brought new challenges to raising funds and organisations like IYM are not immune to it. The following message from IYM explains:

As you know, COVID 19 has had a big impact on funding opportunities but we are being innovative in our approach to this challenge.
We felt that it was some time for some FUN that would bring our faithful supporters together for a great night out but also, give us an opportunity to raise some money.

IYM, in partnership with Rotary Hutt City, have organised an IYM Quiz night. We have a professional quiz master, food platters, a cash bar and lots of free parking!

Thursday 24th September 6 pm for a 6.30 pm start
20 teams of 8 @ $25.00 per person
Venue: Boulcott Farm Heritage Golf Club, 33 Military Road, Lower Hutt

This is a fantastic opportunity for our club to  make up a table of 8 to pit its general knowledge against other clubs and have a fun time doing it!

Rob Whitney has kindly offered to organise a team or two if there is support. If you are interested in joining please contact him rsw703@gmail.com. See flyer below.

A light hearted closing thought well linked to the week's presentation

I made a new password
That no one could guess.
It’s long and confusing
And truly a mess.
It has random letters
and numbers galore,
with dozens of symbols
and spaces and more.
My password is perfect,
completely secure,
and no one will break it;
of that I am sure.
It’s flawless and foolproof.
I don’t have a doubt.
But, whoops! I forgot it
and now I’m locked out.

- Kenn Nesbitt (American poet)
