“Together we make a Difference”

Tena koutou katoa

On February 28 2020 New Zealand became the 48th country in the world to report a case of COVID-19. A month later on 25 March the country went into lockdown and closed its borders! Life has not been the same since.

So, 12 months on, are we any different in our personality, attitude, outlook on life and respect and care for each other? Only you can answer that question but I would like to think that we have individually and collectively become more conscious and aware about what is happening around us, caring more for each other, enjoying the power of giving and how to live in a ‘new normal’. In a sense we have all continued as ‘Rotarians’ as these are the values that encapsulate us as members of the Rotary community.

We all learnt very fast about Zoom as a medium of communication during lockdown and that together with the weekly bulletin retained our cohesiveness, spirit, fellowship and resilience as an organization. Attendance numbers at our breakfast meetings have remained consistently high ever since we were able to resume physical meetings, peaking close to 80% of membership on occasions. I take this opportunity to thank every one of you for the part you played and continue to, in retaining the energy, vibrancy and mission of Port Nicholson Rotary and participating in the various events, community projects and activities we have undertaken. There is more in the pipeline and I look forward to your continued support and commitment.

Since January 2020, we have added 10 new members, 7 since we went into lockdown. That we were able to attract new members during a time of considerable uncertainty is testament to how we are perceived as a collection of people serving the community and the fun we have at our breakfast meetings. Two more potential new members are in the wings and I am hopeful that we can announce their membership in the coming month. We have added diversity and youth, two critical components to sustain our relevance and purpose. If I may add an extract from a recent Rotary International publication: We want everyone who engages with Rotary to feel valued, respected, and welcomed — no matter who they are, where they are in the world, or how long they have been connected with Rotary. One of our priorities is to expand our reach to engage with others who share our passion for service. Our capacity for doing good is amplified when we not only welcome but actively invite into the conversation people who have a variety of experiences, cultures, and perspectives. A strong belief in the power of diversity is one of our enduring strengths, but we recognize that there are still opportunities to learn and grow.

Sadly, Nicole Barker has decided to resign her membership  for personal reasons. As you all know Nicole has been a long standing and very active member of Port Nicholson Rotary and has over the years engaged tirelessly in the services we offer to the community and those in need. Nicole has a passionate affection for our Goalsetters awards and has advised that she will stay committed to that event. We are very grateful for her continued support. I look forward to one day welcoming Nicole back to Port Nicholson.

Guest Speakers

Dr Judy Melinek - Forensic Pathologist
T J Mitchell - Writer

Our speakers were a tag team of Dr Judy Melinek, Forensic pathologist and TJ Mitchell a writer – and her husband. Together they have co-authored three books: Working Stiff; After Shock and First Cut. Working Stiff is non-fiction - a memoir of her training in New York city and on the basis of this book, they were asked to write detective novels, which are loosely based on Judy’s experience.

Judy investigates deaths that are sudden, violent or unexpected. To become a forensic pathologist, requires medical doctor training followed by around 5 years of post-graduate training in anatomical and clinical pathology, running labs and post -mortem examinations on hospitalized patients. This is the preparation for getting a dead body with often no information – not even a name – to figure out what happened.

Judy arrived in New York in July 2001 and had just 2 months of training before September 11. She became one of 30 pathologists charged with identifying the remains of the victims of the World Trade Centre attack. When she had completed her training the family moved to San Francisco, where the events that inspired First Cut and After Shock took place. What was on that laptop that was worth shooting someone for?

As well as the books, they write a blog, media columns and articles for forensic magazines.  Judy writes and TJ edits. They also use social media as a platform. For example, when Donald Trump made a comment about him liking his staffers to dress like women, Judy joined scientists, astronauts, engineers and forensic pathologists posting photos of themselves in their working attire. In Judy’s case in full PPE using a pair of tree pruners to open the chest cavity. #dressedlikedwomen.

Judy was recruited to come to Wellington to be New Zealand’s 9th forensic pathologist – and to help build capacity in the sector. A real motivation to come to New Zealand was so that their two youngest daughters could go to school and socialize with friends – having been in lockdown for over a year and on-line working was not working for them! Judy was also keen to learn from New Zealand’s response to the pandemic which she describes as the gold standard and all the challenges and difficulties we encountered were worth it. Both Judy and TJ consider that we did the right thing!

Judy and TJ were on Nine to Noon on Saturday so if you would like to hear that interview you can listen to the replay on RNZ.

Parkinson’s Collection

Saturday 17 April
New World Chaffers

Many thanks to all those who have already volunteered to collect for the The Parkinson’s annual appeal which is on  Saturday 17 April.

We really appreciate your support.

We have already filled all the morning shifts and now are looking for volunteers to collect from 2pm to 5.30pm at New World Chaffers. The shifts will be an hour long and we need 2 people per shift (the last shift will need to be 90 minutes)

Parkinson’s will supply tee shirts and caps. A table will be set up (as on previous occasions) by the exits from the supermarket checkouts. Ideally, we need 2 people at a time but we can get by with one if needs be.

We need your help so if you would like to volunteer please just let me know and outline the times best suited to your schedule. This is an excellent cause and one that touches many families.

Thank you in advance for your support
