“Together we make a Difference”

Tena koutou katoa

My 49th and last bulletin to you. On Wednesday 30 June, I pass the baton on to Marc.
I don’t have any pearls of wisdom to impart onto you other than to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your support during my term as president.

We started the year with a few challenges and uncertainty as to how Covid-19 will unfold, affect our lives and the work we had ahead of us to fulfil our purpose. My theme for the year ‘Together we make a Difference’ was chosen to enable us to overcome the challenges and to meet the goals we set for the year. That we did and is manifested in our collective achievements over the last 12 months.

President Mike on his last morning for year 2020-21

Rotary International’s theme for the 2021-2022 year is ‘ Serve to Change Lives’. Marc and his team will obviously carry this banner as they set the goals for Port Nicholson Rotary and work with all of us to do exactly that. I look forward to another successful year for Port Nicholson Rotary under his leadership and the support of all of you.

Kia Kaha- Stay Strong & Safe

Mike

Greg Main
Port Nicholson's newest member

President Mike welcomes our latest new member Greg Main to Port Nicholson Rotary Club. The club is honoured and proud that he chose to join the Port Nicholson family and as he has much to contribute just as we all have much to learn from him.

Presentation of funds to our two major Charities for the 2020-21 year

Dr Nathaniel Dasyam, receives the donation from President Mike.

We were privileged to have Dr Nathaniel Dasyam to receive a certificate for $20,000 on behalf of the Malaghan Institute. Dr Dasyam is working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Freemasons CAR T-cell research programme. The Malaghan Institute have a number of projects underway including hookworm trials to research how the hookworms change the state of the immune system so that our bodies systems don’t attack them. They are also working on the development of vaccines (Covid and others), so that New Zealand can generate our own vaccine supplies and not be beholden to international companies.

As our Jane Paterson, Chair of the Friends of Malaghan highlighted, the club has been supporting the Malaghan Institute for around 11 years and because every one of us has been affected in some way by the diseases it is researching, it still sits at the top of the clubs top charity choices – we are proud to continue our support.

Dr Andrew Marshall, Clinical lead for the Children's Hospital receiving the donation from President Mike.

It was also a delight to have Dr Andrew Marshall, Clinical Leader of Child Health at Wellington Hospital, receive a certificate representing the $20,000 raised as part of the clubs annual Charity Auction in May this year.

The funds will go towards the two whanau rooms at Te Wao Nui, the new Childrens Hospital. Port Nicholson club, along with many other clubs in the district, have pledged to raise $400,000 towards fitting out the new children’s unit. The whanau rooms will provide a space for families to chill out and relax while their children are staying at Te Wao Nui. Once again, we are proud to be closely involved in the project and thanks again to our own Bill Day who is running the Wellington Hospital Foundation.

A very proud Bill Day, Chairman of the Wellington Hospitals Foundation looks on.

Perambulators excursion Sunday........

About 20 members, partners and Dusty, Philippa’s soul mate, enjoyed the morning walking the Taua Tapu trek, a 12km stroll from Plimmerton railway station car park to Pukerua Bay and back, following a track used by Maori in earlier times.

The highlight of course was the well deserved lunch at the Palmer’s Garden cafe. A good 3 1/2 hrs enjoyed by all!

A happy Bunch!

Magazine Designer role for SGCNZ

With Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ)’s Editor/Designer of our quarterly magazine Accent on Shakespeare reluctantly having to retire owing to new work pressures, we are urgently looking for a replacement for this role. It is more relating to design of the magazine than editing.
Lynn, the incumbent, is kindly providing the templates and has offered to assist with advice if required.
There is an extremely modest remuneration.
If, or you know anyone who might be interested, please contact Dawn Sanders as soon as possible on 027 283 6016 E: dawn@sgcnz.org.nz
