Dr Marc Rands

Club profile: Paula Smith McKnight

In February 2022 I will have been a member of Port Nicholson Rotary for 30 years. I have been on the Club Services, Goal Setters, Membership, Youth, and Projects Committees. I was President in 2000-2001 and was Director of Club Services twice. Soon after being President, I was asked to join the District Scholarships committee – six years went by with two as Chairman – each year organising a National Seminar for incoming and outgoing scholars. I was awarded a PHF award in 2006 and Sapphire pin in 2018. I have been co-publishing the weekly Bulletin for 2 ½ years and am currently Director of the Projects Committee.

I grew up on a dairy farm near Whakatane. I went to the University of Otago studying Home Science. For 30 years I was employed at Wellington Polytechnic and Massey University both in teaching and senior management roles – School of Fashion and Food (WP) and College of Sciences (MU). I completed an MBA at Victoria University on my 50th birthday!! I enjoy being outdoors – biking, golfing, perambulating! Lots of other things but this is too long already!

Rotary in New Zealand’s Centenary year:

Waikato times, 6 September 1921

Attack on Everest. Difficulties of Ascent. Weather at its worst. The dispatch from the Mount Everest Expedition, dated August 4 states that after months of reconnoitring , the time has arrived to move camp to the east side of Everest and explore the approaches. It was found that the only hope was to try the east and north-east faces owing to the precipices elsewhere… The weather is now at its worst, and it is a question of waiting for better conditions.

All the best,
Marc

At the meeting this week the
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson held its Annual General Meeting.

Mike Selvadurai delivers his report

Of note to begin with, David Barnes provided some inspiration for Buying the Box by suggesting that we share thoughts on memorable movies that we have seen. We had some classics like Ben Hur, but John Bishop brought forward some repressed memories of his childhood with thoughts of another classic – the Sound of Music. I know he would appreciate it if anyone had copies of the movie soundtrack so that he can happily sing along to ‘doe-a-dear, a female dear…etc’ as he pursues his motorhome journey along the southern back country roads in Canterbury next week – just like a family Von Trapp in the Austrian alps. You never know, he might break into a yodel or two 😊

David Barnes inspires us all to Buy the Box

Current President Marc Rands introduced Mike Selvadurai, Immediate Past President to provide a summary of the immediate past Rotary year at the club. Like David Shackleton, the year before him, his year was influenced by wider Covid events although he managed to slip in a quick Goal Setters and Auction along with most of the youth events that we would normally run and the club has also grown in membership.

Mike also had some changes to the club constitution to make adjustments as per changes in Rotary International requirements for running clubs.

Lindsay gave us a summary of the accounts and by combining funds across the Last two years, we were able to distribute just under $100k to the various causes we support, and we still have some $20k plus in the kitty to further support further causes.

Lindsay Chitty summarises the accounts

Resolutions to pass the changes to the constitution and acceptance of the meeting minutes, club and trust accounts etc were passed.
Marc confirmed the appointment of Dawn Sanders as the President Elect for the next club year – congratulations Dawn – we are looking forward to your stewardship.

Meeting done and dusted for another year!

     Update 3

     World Polio Day 24 October
World Polio Day is on the 24th of October and the Rotary community is getting ready to amplify its message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from this devastating disease.

Rotary has made tremendous progress. However we still need to intensify our fight to make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated. Last year, the World Health Organization’s African region was certified free of wild poliovirus, showing that eradication is possible even in very difficult circumstances. The wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the good news is that Rotary is working with the Taliban to continue its inoculation programme.

Rotary has been working for 35 years to eradicate polio. The first children to be vaccinated were in the Philippines and since that time Rotary has reduced cases by 99.9%.

Rotary has donated $2.1 billion dollars in the 35 years and provided countless volunteer hours to protect 3 billion children in 122 countries. It costs $3 on average to protect a child against polio and we are committed to raise $50 million a year. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have joined with Rotary to eliminate polio and provide a 2 for 1 matching grant. Making our efforts even more significant.

Our club is committed to raising funds through selling “bacon butties” at the train station on Thursday 11th November and promoting the “Ride the Train event” on Sunday 14th. This is of course Covid permitting.

More information about both those events will be forthcoming and we thank you in advance for your support
