I have been a member with the Port Nicholson Club since 1996 – the 25 years have passed all too fast. During that time I have been on most committees and was Membership Director 15 years ago and am currently the membership director and have been for the last 3 years. In addition I work as a part time contractor to AA as a Defensive Driving instructor, which I thoroughly enjoy. We live in Wadestown with both children having flown the nest.

We need more members.

The club is on a membership drive, Membership Director Richard Brodie told members this week, to boost numbers and to correct the decline in the gender balance.

As of Wednesday, with a new member being inducted, active members now number 55, compared to 48 in January 2020 and 51 in June 2021.

The club still has more males than females as members – 63% to 37% and the ratio has slipped a bit from earlier in the year when it was 60%-40%.
The average age is now 60, a figure which Richard said had dropped in the last two years and was well down on five years ago when the club didn’t have anyone under 40 and “a lot were over 70.”
Members were also joining at a younger age: last year just 8% were under 40 and that figure had increased to 13%.

Richard said membership was a task that “the club had to work on constantly.”
He said members were good at talking to new members and making them feel welcome, something other clubs didn’t do as well as Port Nich did. He also noted that the club needed to reverse the gender slide and he was looking to the women members to get active about that.

He also pointed to the current shortage of potential new members, and to assist members to “get a member’, he distributed a sheet listing a range of occupations and asked that members challenge themselves to find “at least one new member each this year.”

Update 2

The Rotary Learning Centre

As I mentioned previously, one of my District roles is being on the Learning and Development team. Over the past two weeks we have been running a series of Zoom training sessions on the Rotary Learning Centre.

The Learning Centre is a wonderful resource for all Rotary members, offering a whole range of courses on everything you need to know about Rotary. And it is all free. Several of our members have been participating in these sessions and Port Nicholson is generally well represented, so thank you.

Access to the Learning Centre is easy and is available to all Rotarians.  All you need to do is type My Rotary into your browser, enter your email address and a password and you are in.

Once you have accessed the site, go to the Learning and Reference title in main menu, click on it and access the Learning Center (note the American spelling). There is a myriad of courses available which will help you understand your role and that of your committee and much besides.

The courses can take 15 minutes or one hour depending on the subject and your availability. They cover everything from leading change, being a good facilitator, diversity, equity, and inclusion etc. Once, you completed the course you even get a certificate.

Enjoy the courses, and if you have any difficulties accessing the site, just let me know.

Tony Herring

This week Marc inducted new member Tony Herring to the club. We look forward to getting to know Tony and welcome his contribution to Rotary activities.

Wellington College Runathon

Will Chandler, Head Boy of Wellington College, came to our meeting on Wednesday morning to talk about the Wellington College Runathon. It is a an event that creates camaraderie across the year groups by getting everyone involved. Other schools also participate. The money raised over the years is over one million dollars and has gone to support a community in Tanzania and, more recently Cambodia. This year the event raised a record $120,000.
Flash Friday Frolics

A keen group of Rotarians had an enjoyable lunch at the Fork and Brewer on Friday.

Howard led a walk around the Horoeka Scenic Reserve in Stokes Valley this morning with Bob, Elaine, Jenny, Edward, Marjorie, and Marc. It was very enjoyable and worthy of a repeat! It was followed by an enjoyable coffee stop.
Peter led a slightly longer walk around the Tawhai Track - photos to follow.
