It was great to see a good turnout of members to the breakfast meeting on 19th August in spite of the L2 restrictions, and made all the more memorable by John Mills’ captivating ‘down to earth’ member presentation!

Thank you to the members who responded to the health check survey- 80% response. That demonstrates a commitment and engagement by members to Port Nic. Your feedback is what enables the board to diagnose the problems and prescribe remedies. Key findings:
  • 90% are satisfied with membership (69% last year). The balance somewhat satisfied
  • 77% read the weekly bulletin.
  • 58% do not follow the club on social media.
  • 98% enjoy the Rotary experience
  • 88% feel members care about each other. Balance somewhat/indifferent
  • 69% feel the club actively involves all members
  • 85% feel the club keeps up with the times and changing social expectations.
  • 28% are somewhat constrained financially by Covid-19
  • 90% feel the fundraising activities are appropriate
  • 92% support engaging with community on social and environmental projects
  • 100% support our engagement with and sponsorship of youth on Rotary programmes and collaboration with Rotaract and Interactors
  • 90% enjoy the breakfast meetings
  • 65% support informal meetings outside the Wellington Club every two months
  • encouragingly there was high response rate to questions that asked for comments on what members like, or do not, about the club and improvements that they would like to see.
Whilst there is overwhelming support for the way our organization is run, there are areas where improvements need to be made and I am grateful that members took time and effort to articulate them. The board has a clear idea of areas where changes need to be made. For example, happy dollar sessions drew negative responses and the board acted decisively to disband it at the meeting on Wednesday. "Buy the Box" will be retained as that gives members an opportunity to talk about events in their lives and also an avenue for the club to collect funds.

Communication is an important tool for the effective management of an organization and enhancement of relationships between people. We are fortunate at Port Nic that we have an open forum for that and members are given every opportunity to express views, concerns and exchange ideas. However, if you have an issue relating to our club or your membership in the club, which you feel needs to be expressed privately, my door is always open. Call me, send me an email or ask to meet over coffee.

If you wish to learn more about cannabis before we vote on it, don’t forget we have Dr Karen Oldfield from the Medical Research Institute talking to us about it at our meeting on Wednesday.

ngã mihi

Mike

Guest Speaker Report

One of our own - John Mills

The real Southern Man...

Johns official bio reads something like this:

"As a current mediator and former Environment
Court Commissioner John has sat as a member of the Environment Court with Judges, has participated in the writing of the decisions of the Court and has presided over “Commissioner Alone” hearings of the Court. He has been involved with cases for both applications for proposed activities and applications for Plan Changes. John was a former Southland Regional Councillor and held chair positions on
several committees. During and prior to this period John owned sheep and beef farms in Southland.
He has significant experience in decision making around the environment and natural resources and knowledge of rural New Zealand."

But there is so much more to this man who was born in Invercargill, the son of a High Court Judge. His upbringing was solidly grounded in all the things that we used to enjoy doing like building and racing go-karts made bits of wood and pram/trolley wheels – even to the extent of hoisting a sail made from his mums curtains and curtain rod and going so fast that he passed cars!
That entrepreneurial spirit took him to all parts of the world and served him well.

He went to boarding school as his folks moved to Wanaka and he gained his degree at Lincoln Uni having also spent a couple of years on farms loving the outdoor lifestyle. He jumped on a ship for his OE and he and his mate ‘freedom camped’ in the back of and Escort van all around Europe.

On his return he saw that there were some free
flights to Canada, and he jumped at the chance. The flights came with a few hooks – you had to look after the animals on the flight and make sure they stayed calm and alive until departure. He learnt very quickly how to administer sedatives to the animals and
landed in Edmonton at 2am in the morning in the freezing cold wondering what to do next.

From here wanderlust takes over - working on ranches, driving to California to work on a cauliflower farm, driving down to Central America through
Mexico and then back up the middle of the US to Canada again. Over to London, down to Nairobi on safari and driving to Rhodesia with some well-armed militia chaps along, hitchhiking to South Africa and then
back to NZ …are you keeping up!

Back to working on farms and sheep stations in and around Wanaka until he managed to buy a small farm not in Te Anau where the air was clear, but it was bloody cold. He farmed there for 20 years and during this time he married Anna and had a couple of children in addition to the son he had managed to have sometime before.

He did a leadership course which changed his life and ultimately led to his running for the regional council
in Te Anau – 3 times! He bought a bigger farm, was appointed to the Environment Court, leased his farm and headed to Wellington. He loved it so much he eventually sold his farm and has stayed in Wellington ever since. He has been involved in half marathons, triathalons and enjoys swimming and cycling.

This is just a snippet – John has farming in his blood and if you want to hear some great yarns from this man with a great sense of humour, I’m sure the best way to do it would be over a couple of beers…
probably Speights!

David Barnes introduced Everard and President Mike inducted him into the club. Five years ago, until the club closed Everard was a member of Harbour City Rotary Club in charge of youth, Outward Bound, D.O.E., UN youth conferences and would still like
to be involved in this direction.

The Innovative Young Minds (IYM) Programme
The programme is designed to encourage young women to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing.

It's a programme that that our club actively supports as part of our youth support goals. This year we jointly sponsored with IRANZ two on-line sessions to IYM. Karen Oldfield our speaker this week was one of the role-model young women who contributed to our sessions.

Covid-19 has brought new challenges to raising funds and organisations like IYM are not immune to it. The following message from IYM explains:

As you know, COVID 19 has had a big impact on funding opportunities but we are being innovative in our approach to this challenge.
We felt that it was some time for some FUN that would bring our faithful supporters together for a great night out but also, give us an opportunity to raise some money.

IYM, in partnership with Rotary Hutt City, have organised an IYM Quiz night. We have a professional quiz master, food platters, a cash bar and lots of free parking!

Thursday 24th September 6 pm for a 6.30 pm start
20 teams of 8 @ $25.00 per person
Venue: Boulcott Farm Heritage Golf Club, 33 Military Road, Lower Hutt

This is a fantastic opportunity for our club to  make up a table of 8 to pit its general knowledge against other clubs and have a fun time doing it!

Rob Whitney has kindly offered to organise a team or two if there is support. If you are interested in joining please contact him rsw703@gmail.com. See flyer below.
