Greetings from Melbourne! It’s a bit chilly over here but Sue and I are enjoying our break away to spend 10 days with our granddaughter – hence a brief report from me this week. Ever so grateful that we have the chance to travel across the ditch after 14 months of border closure.

Thank you, David, for filling in for me and presiding over the breakfast meeting last week.

For those of you who attended the launch of Mana Tangata People of Action on 12th May at the National Library I hope you enjoyed the event and found it uplifting. Thank you, Bev, Howard, Peter, Marc, David, Rob, and Warwick, for volunteering to assist in the exhibition that followed on Friday and Saturday.

As I reported at an earlier breakfast meeting following a decision at the April board meeting, Port Nicholson Rotary has agreed to join the Carbon Calculator project, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Wellington the purpose of which is to measure our carbon footprint which of course is a step towards identifying measures to reduce our carbon emissions. Marc Rands will lead a team including Tori Triegaardt and Eden Skipper. Members will be asked to assist by responding to questionnaires.

The Board meets on Monday, 17th May. One of the matters on the agenda will be a decision on the distribution of the funds raised from the charity auction to be donated to The Children’s Hospital and the Malaghan Institute. I will update on that and other board matters at the breakfast meeting on Wednesday.

We have a few exciting social and community events coming up which I hope many of you will attend:
  • 20th May - social evening at One Red Dog.
  • 24th May - Rotary Club of Wellington centennial gala dinner at Parliament
  • 11th June - Friday Flashback at Waitoa Brewery.
  • 13th June - community tree planting in Tawa.
  • 23rd June – informal breakfast meeting at Leuven
  • 7th July- Changeover at Wellington Club

For the 13th year in a row, The Rotary Foundation received a four-star rating — the highest possible — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the United States, who determines its ratings by examining how non-profits use their funds, how sustainable their programs are, and how well they follow industry standards of transparency and accountability. It is always reassuring to know that our annual giving to The Foundation ($7,800 this year) is used effectively and meaningfully.

The Rotary International Convention which was supposed to be held in Taipei, Taiwan this year will now be a virtual event due to Covid-19. This will be held 12-16 June and offers an opportunity for members to experience the event. Please register in the by clicking on this link if you wish to attend and learn more about Rotary.

Guest Speaker
Jon Duffy, CEO Consumer New Zealand

Consumers need Consumer.

The Consumers’ Institute began 61 years ago as part of a government department when people selling encyclopaedias door to door using high pressure sales tactics was a problem.

Now called Consumer New Zealand and also now separated from government, the subscriber based organisation’s chief executive Jon Duffy was this week’s guest speaker at the club.

He noted that people selling door to door was still an issue and distributed “Don’t Knock” stickers which are a legally binding prohibition on canvassers when they are displayed on a household door.

From dealing mainly with consumer complaints and dispensing advice, Consumer has evolved over the years to become an important tester of goods and Mr Duffy noted in particular its continuing battle with manufacturers of sunscreen products.

Another long running battle was over breakfast cereals. “Over half contained more than one third sugar, when we first started testing, and many were more than 50 percent sugar,” he said.

Likewise with cordless vacuum cleaners whose life was often determined by the life of their batteries. Many failed between two and three years use and some had batteries which couldn’t be removed from the machine.

Consumer also operated Powerswitch on behalf of the government, which enabled consumers to see which power company offered the best deal for their pattern of usage. Many had saved money by switching companies. He saw “churn’ in the market positively given the lack of competition in the retail electricity market. “We encourage churn to keep the big guys on their toes.”

Mr Duffy said that the latest customer satisfaction surveys of the various power companies were about to be released and contained “some bad news for the bigger companies.”

Tree Planting
13 June 1pm
Let’s help our planet

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve.

Our goal is to build on what we have done in previous years and continue planting native trees in Tawa.  This is helping to regenerate our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, to make lovely walking areas for us all, and to help slow down global warming.  Interact and Rotaract members are also welcome to join us!  We had a huge turnout from Rotaract last year and together we planted our
500 trees in record time!

If you would like to take part, please contact
Lisa King (lisa.king@treasury.govt.nz), who is a member of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating our Club’s participation.
