If you turn up at Wellington Club at 7am on Wednesday 10 March you will be on your own as most of our members (about 35) and I will be seated at Parliament buildings for the start of the Goalsetters Awards! If you have not registered to attend this wonderful event you can sleep in as a consolation!

At a breakfast meeting a few weeks ago I mentioned that the board had set up a Honours Advisory Group (HAG), the sole purpose of which is to consider and recommend members, community persons and organisations to receive Port Nicholson Rotary honours, namely:
PHF: awarded to members and those outside Rotary who have provided distinguished and/or outstanding service to Rotary, the community and people in need
Keyway: This is the President's award for members or non-members who have helped to "keep the wheels of the club turning". It is for the unsung heroes who over an extended period have stepped forward to make Port Nic the great organisation it is.
Hero’s: This is a Port Nic initiated award to recognise those people who support us but are not Rotarians. It is an informal way of showing our appreciation to all the non-Rotarians who play a part. Last year we awarded it to Winston and Nathan of the Wellington Club for their overwhelming service during our breakfast meetings and the efforts they made to make our meetings enjoyable.
Other Rotary Awards: There are a number of other awards that are presented for a number of reasons.

I am pleased to announce that the ‘HAG’ers ‘appointed are Bev, Jane, Howard and David. They have kicked it off with an inaugural meeting during the week. They will work with the President following which recommendations will be made to the Board for approval. PHF’s are traditionally awarded at Changeover or events and the others during breakfast meetings or occasions as appropriate.

Importantly, all club members can make suggestions and recommendations to the board or HAG for all awards. If you have someone in mind that you consider deserves an award please contact me or any member of HAG. Your involvement in making selections is most welcome.

In closing, I would like to share with you  an article written by a past district governor of District 9212 (Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea & South Sudan). It  was posted in a recent RI publication. Click here to read.

Guest Speaker - Professor Gary Wilson
Climate Change - Antarctica

General Manager Strategy at GNS Science
Vice President - Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
Chair – NZ Royal Society Committee on Antarctic Sciences
Trustee – Sir Peter Blake Trust
Editor in Chief – Geological Oceanography - Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, MDPI Basel Switzerland
Councillor – Australian Institute for Nuclear Science and Engineering
Physical Science Lead – NZ Antarctic Science Platform
Director – Otago Southern Ocean Marine Institute

With credentials like this, for those of you who are climate change sceptics, I challenge you to spend just 30 minutes with Gary and see how you get on arguing your point of view.

Gary has spent oodles of time in the Antarctic – over 30 trips with a total time period of the equivalent of 4 years, getting around by ship, plane, helicopter and those cool tractor mobiles – he knows the place really well.

It seems that the best place to measure what’s going on with global temperature is by seeing what’s happening at the Earth’s poles. Right now – there’s a lot going on!

They drilled into the Antarctic sediment – about 1.3km deep and the story they read from the tea leaves layers told us that while there had been some significant climate change in the past, when you compare those results with where things are heading today – we are off the charts.

The Artic circle is heading for a 5-7-degree increase and the Antarctic is getting warmer as well…not quite tropical but within the next 50 years or so we could say goodbye to the Ross Ice Shelf and other significant chunks of ice. The warming seas eat away at the ice sitting on the sea floor and form a kind of circular current that drags the warm water down and melts more ice shelves - bummer!

So where will all this melting ice end up? Well it could raise the sea levels by between 7 and 20 meters wiping out low lying lands and having more devastating effects with storm surges. The warming oceans mean that we will have more storms, they will be more intense, and we will see bigger floods and stronger winds. It’s pretty bad!

We need to get with the programme and reduce our carbon emissions – NZ has the third highest per capita emissions level behind the US and the Aussies. Even at a personal level you can make a difference – reduce your transport carbon footprint (private transport makes up 50% of transport emissions). Gary has two electric powered vehicles – if we all do something small it can end up being pretty big.

What sort of ancestors do we want to be? – let’s leave a better legacy and better place for our children and their children.

Rotary 100 Baton Walk

The District has obtained one of the centennial batons that are to be used to symbolise the journey and the story of Rotary in NZ over the past 100 years.  The act of carrying the baton on these paths is an opportunity for local Rotarians to become part of an acknowledgement of this piece of our history. DG Gillian has also arranged for the baton to connect up with the opening night of the District 9940 conference in Greytown on Friday March 19.

The baton is being 'run' from Wellington airport to Wellington train station on Saturday March 13, then 'walked' up the Hutt Valley on Sunday 14 March which is where we/Perambulators/Port Nic members come in. The baton is to be eventually carried into the conference in Greytown on Friday19 March.

We are offered a pan-Club opportunity for Rotarians to join the Rotary walk on Sunday March 14. Rotarians should gather at the Avalon carpark, off Fairfield Dr, at 9.30am.  It'll take around 2 hours - that's a nice leisurely pace, time for coffee/lunch at the Fig Tree cafe and a ride back to the cars on the train.
