“Together we make a Difference”

Firstly, congratulations to Edward Leung for being inducted, as a returning member, at our meeting last Wednesday. Edward, we are honoured that you chose to return to Port Nicholson. You have not only added to our membership but bring diversity, energy and enthusiasm. Thank you for that.

This week 20-26 June is National Volunteer Week- Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu. It honours the collective energies and contribution of over 1 million volunteers who enrich Aotearoa, New Zealand. This year’s theme is ‘Recognise, Connect, Reimagine’.

Volunteering is any activity that involves putting your unpaid time, energy and skills to work for the greater good. Rotary of course is in the forefront of this. It’s a global network of volunteers who put Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’ into action every day, generously contributing their time and skills to help others and to carry out its services and projects that address critical needs in the community, locally, regionally and internationally.
Members of Port Nicholson Rotary can take pride that they actively volunteer their time and effort to this cause. If you discover an issue or need in your community that’s not being addressed, raise it at our breakfast meetings or bring it to the attention of the board or the various committees. There is an appetite for new ideas and projects to pursue.

The last meeting of the current board will be held on Tuesday 22 June. It will be a joint meeting of both the current and incoming board who will take office following changeover on 7 July. The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the successors to the outgoing board and to acquaint them with the state of affairs of Port Nicholson, carry over projects and its financial position, all of which are important matters that the incoming board has to take into consideration in formulating its strategy, goals and budget for its year in office.

I take this opportunity to thank all members of the current board for volunteering their time to serve and for their dedication and commitment in carrying out their respective portfolios and for their unfailing support which made my task as president all the more enjoyable, satisfying and productive.
To the incoming board, congratulations on your appointment and I wish President Elect Marc and his team all the very best for a successful year. I look forward to continuing my commitment to Rotary as IPP (Immediate Past President) on the board.

Please don’t forget that the breakfast meeting this Wednesday 23rd June is an informal one at Leuven Beer Café in Featherston St at 7am.

If you have not yet registered for it and wish to attend please do so ASAP - Peter needs to confirm numbers to Leuven for catering purposes. Please don’t forget to pay for your breakfast before you leave.

Superconductors may save the day

It’s not rocket science, well actually it is, but not as we have known it.

Instead of having a massive rocket with lots of huge engines to generate the thrust necessary to lift it off the ground, power it through the atmosphere and break into space, super conductors will use the power of electricity instead.

That’s what Dr Jacob Glowacki of the Robinson Institute told the club this week. Super conductors have been around in some form since it was discovered just over a century ago that certain materials presented no resistance to electrical current at very low temperatures.

Harnessing this for space travel is a relatively new area of research which may make it possible to replace the 90 percent weight of the rocket currently taken up with fuel with a much larger payload by using super conductors which take up much less weight and space. The rocket will be able to go further, faster and take more cargo.

“Electrons in cooper pairs can move through the lattice as a boson,” is the way Dr Glowacki explained it.

The Robinson Institute is part of the Victoria University of Wellington and has been researching superconductors for over 25 years. It has a staff of 40 with another 25 PhD and Masters’ students working from its base in Gracefield.

The Institute holds an MBIE contract to develop and build a thruster and launch it by 2025.

Dr Glowacki cited a 2018 study by Deloitte that the 70 plus business entities in the space sector in New Zealand was worth about $1.8 billion. “The sector is not just Rocket Lab,” he said.
