Congratulations to Joy and Brent on being awarded PHF’s by District Governor Gillian Jones at our breakfast meeting on Wednesday in recognition by District 9940 of their individual contributions to the District and Rotary. It was specially arranged to be a surprise to them and it certainly was! To say they were overwhelmed with emotion is an understatement!

Joy received the PHF + her 3rd sapphire pin for her contribution and work as District Literacy Co-ordinator since 2012 to the present day. This work was done under the auspices of the Bill and Lorna Boyd Charitable Trust which was established in 2006 to assist NZ Rotary on literacy projects focused on our low decile schools. More recently Joy led the Rhyming Around the Alphabet Books programme to support pre-school and up to Year 8/9 children at three Wellington area schools, families and communities in Samoa and Rarotonga and young patients at Wellington Children’s hospital, where she is also involved in fundraising for the new hospital. The occasion was made all the more special with the surprise attendance by her Wellington based brother David and sister-in-law Julie who travelled from Greytown and to present Joy with a lovely bunch of flowers!

Brent received the PHF +1 pin for his professional services to Rotary. As most of you know Brent has considerable experience and skills in information technology, software, infrastructure and operations. The award was to specifically recognise his contribution as District Information and Communications Technology Chair and District Webmaster. He also holds leadership roles as part of Rotary Oceania Zone Operations (ROZops) and ROZtech Standing Committee. Brent was also a lead during president elects training sessions in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Special thanks to Julie Gerrard for attending the early morning breakfast meeting, under pretext, to witness the award to Brent.

The prelude to the PHF presentations was DG Gillian Jones who spoke to us about her year as district governor, the goals she set for her year, the path forward for Rotary, the challenges it faces and the outcomes  it needs to set for the future.

Thank you to Kamini for her member talk and sharing with us the various chapters in her life, the trials and tribulations she had to endure during the turbulent times in Sri Lanka, her journey to New Zealand and her life since then. Learning about our members, their background and heritage strengthens our understanding of and respect for each other- ingredients that bond our friendship and fellowship.

On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 June, 2021, Rotarians from all over New Zealand will gather at Kiri Te Kanawa Auditorium, Aotea Centre, in Auckland for a weekend of celebratory events to mark Rotary NZ’s centennial.
In honour of Rotary’s milestone celebration, Sky Tower will be lit in Rotary’s signature colours of blue and gold on the evening of June 13.

On Wednesday 16 June we will have a new member induction, followed by our guest speaker, Dr Jakub Glowacki ,from the Robinson Institute who will be talking to us about super conductors in space – another intriguing talk! The link to the website is here.

Gillian Jones, District Governor

Gillian spoke about her year as DG.

Gillian called it being the CEO and Chair of the District but did not regard herself as a leader instead sees herself more as a coach.

Gillian found the complexity of the role the most challenging but the real highlight was visiting clubs where she felt she was always warmly welcomed.

It was interesting to find how different and wide ranging clubs are but all are very proactive even the informal clubs like Martin where there is no formal meal but they certainly cut costs and got some projects done.

The gender balance is interesting too with examples such as Pahiatua club where there were 7 women and 2 men, yet Waikanae is all men.  Gillian confirmed that being DG during centennial year has been amazing and would like to think that Rotary will still be around in another 100 years.

Membership is Gillian’s passion and sees the need to involve younger people.  Gillian saw it as a privilege to make awards so she very much enjoyed awarding two of our members Brent Gerard and Joy Durrant with Paul Harris awards.

Kamini Hermon - One of our own

My Journey = 4 Chapters

  1. Early years in Sri Lanka alongside three younger siblings 2 sisters and a brother.  Kamini attended the same private Catholic School (run by Irish Nuns) for girls as Tamaris.  Music was a big part of life and Kamini joined the symphony orchestra at age of 16 playing the cello.  It was while in the symphony that Kamini met her husband Johan at age 17 and they got together at age 19.
  2. Johan lived and worked on a Tea Plantation in the mountains of Sri Lanka so once they were married Kamini moved to be in the lush cooler region with an extensive garden including cows, chickens and a pony for one of their daughters.  They were quite isolated even from other plantation managers who were all looked after well by the plantation owners.  They did gather at a local club for social events and to play sport such as badminton.  They would drive five hours to visit family in Colombo but Johan’s family had immigrated to NZ in 1972.  Kamini was not able to continue with her music but did train as a Montessori educator.
  3. By the time Kamini and Johan’s youngest child was born the situation in Sir Lanka was changing and travelling around for holidays did not feel safe.  Kamini and Johan experienced great danger as tea plantation managers were seen as targets by the terrorists.  In 1989 they immigrated to NZ with two small children and had to start their lives all over again without any savings which had to remain in Sri Lanka at that time.  Johan had to change careers and went back to university but Kamini was able to work as a Montessori Educator later running her own Montessori School.   Kamini and Johan were successful and sent both daughters to university something Kamini believes they may not have been able to do in Sri Lanka.
  4. Johan passed away in 2013, having never expected to grow old without him Kamini has started a new chapter.  The school was sold and now days are busy with grandchildren, keeping up with family in NZ and overseas and filled with fitness classes, concerts etc.   There were other perils of wisdom and of destiny but overall Kamini has to date had a very full and happy life saying that she does not believe in having regrets.  It takes up too much energy.

Thank you Kamini for sharing your journey it was so interesting and full of warmth despite the difficult times you have faced.

Tree Planting
13 June 1pm
Let’s help our planet

Around 25 Rotarians, partners and Interactors turned up on Sunday 13 June to help plant around 500 plants and native trees on the slopes of Woodman Reserve.

This is part of Port Nicholson Rotary’s community project and ongoing partnership with the Friends of Tawa Bush Reserve.

This is our fourth year of planting and today we reached the milestone of planting close to 2000 trees during that time. Mighty effort by the Port Nicholson team and a really fun day.

A big thank you to Lisa for coordinating and the well deserved afternoon tea!! Particular thanks to the Interactors who also gave up the afternoon for this worthy cause.
