An Opportunity to Help
And we are off. We are back up and running and members are keen to take part in our club’s activities. I mentioned after the sergeant’s session on Wednesday how members had demonstrated their generosity with so many people buying the box that day.
Here is another opportunity. We get letters all the time from students seeking support to do various things and the club helps where it can. We send people to RYLA – two this year; and also to the Science Fairs, and last year to a new programme for high school girls interested in Science, Engineering, Maths and Technology. But our resources are always limited.
I got a letter this week from the parents of a young student called Lucy who is profoundly deaf, but who has been selected by the Deaf Association to represent New Zealand at an international camp for deaf students.
The letter from her parents, Peter and Kate McKenzie-Bridle says “Between 8-14 April 2018, Lucy will be part of a group attending the World Deaf Federation Youth Section Children’s Camp in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“That camp will bring together over 120 Deaf campers from across the world for 5 exciting days.
“The camp provides the campers with a wide range of experiences from learning international sign language, to playing in ‘Olympic’ sports, a cultural exchange, and other workshops, activities, and trips.
“Lucy is an interested, interesting, energetic, and confident Kiwi who is also deaf – she will be great contributor to the camp, and a fantastic representative of Aotearoa/New Zealand.”
Costs are about $2 900, “A little over half of that money pays for flights and travel. The other half pays for camp fees and other costs.”
The Deaf Association is putting in $1 000, and Lucy needs to find another $1 900.
More than usual, this particular request touched me. I checked with Victoria, our youth programme co-ordinator and as suspected, we don’t have any uncommitted funds.
So, what to do? Answer: ask the members if there are any who would like to help. The simplest way would seem to be to pay directly into her bank account.
Her dad says” You can make donations to support Lucy either through a Givealittle fundraising page set up for this purpose, or through direct credit to Lucy’s trust bank account:
Account name: Lucy McKenzie-Bridle Trust
Account number: 01-0505-0689712-46
I am putting in $50 myself. Any other member who would like to do so, please go ahead. I am sure she will appreciate it. Happy to send the full letter to any member who would like to see it.
I am checking with her parents about whether she can speak to the club about her experiences on her return. Happy to send the full letter to any member who would like to see it.
