Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 20 April 2018

President's Message

This week we had a good meeting with a small attendance. Low numbers are always something of a disappointment particularly given that the speakers were two young people whom we had sponsored to RYLA in January.

Holding our meeting on a Monday continues to influence attendance – sometimes it is greater than others.

This week was also the alternative breakfast, and your board has agreed to review this arrangement in June/July. Members will be asked for their views.

In other developments Hayley Burns has asked to suspend her membership for a while. She’s compiling the bulletin while Linda is away, and I have thanked her for doing that. Hopefully we will see her back late in the year.

Next week there are two Rotary events: one is our normal club meeting on Monday 22 April, and on Wednesday there is the special ANZAC Day breakfast following the gathering at the National War Memorial.

Joy tells me that 30 have signed up so far, so there is room to take more. And people who want to come to only the breakfast can do so. Just sign up separately with Joy for that. The well known historian Chris Pugsley is the guest speaker at the breakfast and he is excellent.

We are now only three weeks away from the charity auction on Friday 4 May, one of the biggest nights on our club calendar. The combined dinner, quiz night and auction is being well supported by club members, and by the two charities involved, the Malaghan Institute and Wellington Free Ambulance, but the good news is that we are virtually full.

As of yesterday, we were looking at nearly 200 people attending, and Rick Hughes was ringing those who said they would come but hadn’t confirmed. So, it is going to be full house and a great night.

Rotary Young Person Leadership Awards 2018

Anna Hayward & Greg Mason

Anna and Greg gave a presentation on the amazing time they had at RYLA 2018.  The Rotary Young-Person Leadership Award is a week long leadership development programme packed with many activities.  Anna and Greg gave their highlights for each of the days.

On the first day there were a number of fun icebreakers to help them get to know the other attendees.  They both found the Tetramap personality profiles to be very useful in learning about different leadership styles.  They also had a lot of fun building a geodesic dome out of newspaper, sellotape, and staples.

The second day presented them with an amazing opportunity to get hands-on experience with fundraising.  They had to promote Emergency Response Kits (ERKs).  Anna and Greg had to go out and fundraise to the public in Silverstream.  It was a valuable experience as they had to take rejection and advice from other people.  Afterwards they went to Parliament and Greg got to introduce Chris Bishop to the attendees.

On the third day they had a talk from Ganesh Cherian about privilege and prejudice.  Ganesh has had a number of different hairstyles and talked about how these affected other peoples perceptions of him.  This talk was eye-opening.  In the evening they had a BBQ dinner and met a number of Rotarians including our own Bev.

The highlight of the fourth day was the adrenaline forest high rope challenge.  This was tiring both mentally and physically.  One person fell of a platform and was left hanging there, shouting out “I’m going to die!”.  Luckily someone manage to jump on a little platform and pick him up.  In the evening they listened to previous Rylarians and learnt that “There are no zero days”.  Greg has found this useful with learning the guitar and his side projects.

The final day was the pirate themed triathlon.  They created a raft with tires and had to perform various activities.  On Anna’s raft one tire popped and another went missing.  They came last but she didn’t notice since the experience was so positive.  Greg’s team performed better but their raft started to fall apart in the last activity.

Overall they had an incredible experience and found it hard to leave.  Greg was unsure if he could learn anything new about leadership but he found that there was always more you could learn about leadership.  Anna had some useful advice that she shared with us: always be positive, don’t let others define you, express gratitude, exercise and look after yourself, and most importantly: have fun!

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.

RotaFEST 18 - A Festival of Rotary

11 - 13 May 2018, Palmerston North Convention Centre
We have listened to your feedback and this year’s annual District Rotary Event will NOT be a conference! This year RotaFEST 18 will incorporate in the programme many activities and opportunities for you to be entertained, to witness the Rotary opening of a world first in native animal care at WildBase Recovery, to enjoy world class speakers, and to share our Rotary experience and activities with each other and the community.

Please let Bev Wells know if you are going to attend and we can look at combined accommodation … maybe an Airbnb house to keep costs down, but we’ll have to be quick, so email: bev.wells@xtra.co.nz. There’s also the option of travelling up for just the Training Assembly on the Sunday which I would recommend for all members to refresh our thoughts and particularly helpful for newer members.  Any questions, get in touch.

Refugee support

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson is looking to support the settlement of refugees that arrive in Wellington, in co-ordination with the Anglican Cathedral. Club members are invited to help provide dry pantry items for refugee families, roughly six times a year.

We have been provided with a list of 20 items to source for the refugee family's pantry pack, which work out at around $100 for a family of four, but if split between five, would be only $20 each, or you may have the items in your own pantry that you might like to donate.

The next family will be arriving in April, so if you would like to take part, let me know and I will allocate the items between those interested, and arrange to collect the items on Sunday 22 April.

If any Club member has any house hold items/linen that they would like to donate to the refugees, please contact Patricia Cooper (Anglican Diocesan Refugee Resettlement Co ordinator) on patricia@wn.ang.org.nz
