Our District Govenor Marilyn Stephens will share news from the district as well as the Rotary activities that are available to members.
Marilyn joined Rotary in 1993 as a charter member of Hutt Valley Breakfast Club and subsequently, as jobs dictated, transferred
to Plimmerton, Otaki, Takaro, Levin and now Kapiti. She has been on District Committees for 30 years and was the first woman in District 9940 to lead a GSE Team overseas. She has been team leader for two friendship exchanges and been host to about 30 international students.
Ella Thorpe will also say a few words on what she has been up to since she was in Interact.

Auckland Flooding Support
Rotary members in upper north island districts are working together with community organisations to provide assistance to people affected by the extreme weather events up North.
The death toll in Syria and Turkey has now surpassed 25,000 people and may well double. It is mid-winter and many survivors do not have enough food, water, heating or basic amenities to keep themselves alive.
Shelterbox have arrived in Istanbul and are coordinating with DGs of the three affected districts and other aid organsiations.
They are running an emergency fundraising appeal. Click here to see how and where you can donate funds to support these very vulnerable people.

Goal Setter Awards 2023 Presentation Breakfast

37 students applied for 2023 Goal Setter awards and the panel has selected 10 to be interviewed early March. From this, 4 outstanding students who have shown they can set and achieve goals, have faced significant challenges in their lives and have given service to their community will be awarded $4,000 each. At the time of applying they will be in at least their second year of study in a Wellington Tertiary institution.
The presentation breakfast will be held on Wednesday 19th April at the Pipitea Marae and Function Centre on Thordon Quay. Peter Boshier will be the guest speaker and each of the recipients will speak briefly on their story.
Tickets are available from Richard for $70 each (or $700 for a table of 10).

From the President..
Thank you to all who contributed to the Club Forum. Some very useful suggestions which we will followup at the next Board Meeting.
In the meantime, the elements continue to wreck havoc around the globe. While writing this, preparations are underway by those in the upper North Island for Cyclone Gabrielle…hot on the heels of the storms which saw disastrous damage and loss of life. We wish all well and will respond as is necessary.
Seeing the devastating effects of the catastrophic and deadly 7.8 earthquake which struck southern and central Turkey and western Syria, the sharply climbing figures of over 23,000 fatalities already are considered understated, with many unregistered people in Turkey. Structural damage has occurred as far away as in Israel and Cyprus. Money is what is most urgently required. RNZWCS (Rotary New Zealand World Community Service) is coordinating these campaigns, with special attention to checking for scams.
With locally a focus on collaborations, we are working on several projects. Thanks to Anne some of our members are marshalling at Round the Bays, and as with the Parking, there is a financial benefit to our Club. Mount Victoria Rotary is calling for assistance from our and other Clubs for its Big Dig, at Freyberg Beach, Oriental Parade on Saturday 4 March (weather postponement date Sunday 5). The Big Dig itself is from 11am – 2pm but people are required for about 2 hours each to help set up from 8am and pack down, to be finished by 3.30pm. People power is required on the day with set up, marshalling the event, sausage sizzle, handing out prizes, collecting entry fees, pack down etc.
The Zealandia Project I have mentioned at the Forum is being progressed, again in cohorts with other Clubs in our Network. The Lifting the Lid project is our most vital project and advancing thanks to David S and Richard.
More discussion will undoubtedly result following the presentations next week by DG Marilyn Stevens and former Interactor, Ella Thorpe.
