Sheena Millar

Sheena Millar is the Principal at Onslow College, one of the schools we are supporting with Lifting the Lid - providing extra funding for students to access counselling services. Sheena will speak to us about the impact she has seen so far of Lifting the Lid being rolled out at Onslow.

Good mental health and wellbeing is essential for student success. For a lot of young people, a lack of wellbeing gets in the way of their attendance, engagement, and achievement.

The support of Lifting the Lid helps children and young people better manage issues such as bullying, loneliness, anxiety at school, or loss or grief.

We now have at least six secondary schools and three intermediates signed up to receive our financial support, to allow young people to access these vital services.

Thoughts from President Tony

This week I attended a half day Summit at our new Takina Convention Centre. It involved business leaders, community organisations and the Wellington City Council and its main theme unsurprisingly was reinvigorating business, looking for new opportunities and the future of our region. Howard Tong and Yon Yee were also there so we were well represented. Howard, who is presently on leave, sent his very best regards to everyone.

It was good to see the Council’s 10 year plan discussed with one of its seven key headings being ‘the health of our waterways'. This dovetailed beautifully with Dr Nicole Miller’s address this week on this exact subject as we were reminded that the Harbour of which we are all so proud in fact is home to discarded E scooters, tyres, batteries and general refuse. The point was made that what we cannot see does not concern us. The message is we need to know and seek out the essential information regarding our region’s health and future.

I am sorry to be missing the next address on ‘Lifting the Lid’ but wonderful to hear from the School's perspective just how many students have already been helped from this outstanding Rotary initiative.

So time to pack for America. I look forward to sending some thoughts and photos from afar!

Virtual Conference

Time is running out to secure your ticket for the upcoming Virtual conference, being held in late October.

With a speaker list jam-packed, audiences will hear inspirational stories from business and community leaders and experts in their fields.

Key note speakers include Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally and Rotary International President-elect Stephanie Urchick.

Registration costs will be $25 per Rotarian or Rotaractor.

Local legend Fraser Ebbett has been running the iconic Harbourside Market for over 13 years and recently received a PHF award from us, recognising his personal outstanding commitment to making the waterfront a better place for the community and the city. Read Fraser's story here.

Coastal Ecosystems die a death of a thousand cuts

Only 0.4% of New Zealand's National waters are protected by marine reserves, and in a way it is a classic case of 'out of sight, out of mind'. Between pollution and an over population of kina, the kelp forests and resulting ecosystems are hugely threatened around New Zealand, even in areas that tout themselves as doing a great job of maintaining their wellbeing.

This week, Dr Nicole Miller, the Chair of The Friends of Taputeranga Marine Reserve Trust came and spoke to us about an underwater world that deserves our attention.

COP15, the 15th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in 2022, saw nearly 200 countries agree to protect 30% of oceans, coastal areas and inland waters by 2030.
