Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 20 September 2018
  President's Message

You will see in this week’s Bulletin we are springing into action with social events and community service activities coming up through until Christmas! Please take some time this week to check through the list of events to register online.

Our Board meets next Tuesday and following the meeting, we will circulate our finalised budget for the year. Engaging with youth is one of our three key focus areas this year and the budget includes the areas of youth we will be supporting. You will receive an update from the Board in the next few weeks.

As I write this, New Zealand is acknowledging the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. In Rotary it was not until 1989 that the Rotary International Constitution was updated to eliminate the requirement that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men, and women were welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world.

Several years ago, I used to proudly state to people that our club membership numbers defied the usual Rotary club gender make-up and that Port Nich. was almost gender equal. As of today, 32% are female. We still defy the traditional make-up of many clubs and I do really enjoy all our members regardless of gender, but I do notice how the culture of any group alters, for what I think is for the better, when there is more of a gender balance. Just food for thought.

I’m looking forward to our social events coming up. It seems ages since our changeover!

Bev

Speaker's Report

Membership:

The key points raised: the key points raised that our membership meeting were:
The majority of our current members were approached by a club member to come along to the meeting. We want to replicates this.
One idea is for three members to work together in identifying and inviting someone along, and following up with that person afterwards. Inviting them to an activity or event can be an effective way for them to meet members.
Holding a club membership day with the club meeting focused on the show-casing the club to potential members; key guest speaker as a draw-card.
Promotion by leaving posters at workplaces for staff noticeboards.
Pro-active approach of getting potential members meeting at a cafe several times, then visiting a club meeting together.
We noted that a smaller sized group can affect our ability to attract high-profile speakers.

Beverly Wells.

Brenda Dave will meet Roger on their return from holiday, develop a Health and Safety Plan and put this to the Council for their sign off for the first phase.Roger has indicated that the window for data-gathering will be about right for the next stage, i.e. trap design and program.
