Tēnā koutou. I have been a club member for almost 3 years. I live in Blenheim but work at Victoria University of Wellington where I am the Director of the Academic Office which really means I run some of the quality assurance processes for the University and oversee the development of academic policy. So I have one foot either side of the Cook Strait. I am a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors and am currently on the Board of the Marlborough Cancer Society. I also have a background in Health. In my spare time I am an avid gardener and embroiderer and my husband and I love travelling around New Zealand when we can.

Wheatmeal Bread. Its nutritive value. In view of the fact that recently opinions have been appearing in the public press on the above subject, differing from those expressed from time to time by the Health Department through the same channel, the following statement is made, based on the modern opinions of accepted authorities. To the general community, bread is a food the nutritive value of which is of the greatest importance, forming as it does the ground work of the diet. This is especially so in the case of growing children.
WRGL provides a fully comprehensive diagnostic molecular genetic (DNA) and cytogenetic (chromosome) testing service. Jo and her team spend their time running genetic tests looking for mutations and gene alterations. These differences in chromosome/DNA and other cell molecular components cause a number of diseases that afflict us.
For example, Huntingdon's disease is caused by a single gene defect on one of our chromosomes. The hemophilia gene, caused by a spontaneous mutation, was passed from Queen Victoria, who became Queen of England in 1837, to the ruling families of Russia, Spain, and Germany.
There are multiple ways of checking with karyotyping (structural), mongenic/polygenic, biochemical. Molecular testing – microarray (measuring), FISH (fluorescent identification of chromosomes), DNA sequencing …these are all different methods for searching for defects.
Jo tells us that there is new exciting technology coming which will allow them to more quickly identify disorders and abnormalities that cause diseases issues for us.
I did notice in her slides a photo of X and Y chromosomes…the X chromosome was twice as long as the Y chromosome…I suspect that might explain a few things between women (X) and men (Y)!
Awesome talk Jo…thx
