Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 15 November 2018
  President's Message

The Board met on Tuesday night. We were pleased to hear the club had selected three young people to attend Rotary youth programmes this summer; Clare Ennis will attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) programme; Danny Kivi and Allegra Preddy will attend the National Science and Technology Forum. As is the standing arrangement with the Forum, both Danny and Allegra will each contribute 50% towards the costs. Our club has also found two other Rotary clubs to sponsor two more RYLA candidates. Thank you to all the interviewers!

A payment of $10,000 was approved to The House of Grace Charitable Trust, specifically towards their ‘Warm Home Project’ which includes re-roofing, double-glazing windows, insulation and modifications to the heating system of the home for young pregnant girls aged between 12-23 years and new-born babies. This payment comes from unallocated funds from the Charity auction. They have already raised $32,000 towards their $95,000 target. A new Give a Little page has recently been set-up. For more information, please go to: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/fixing-our-home-for-pregnant-teens

I phoned House if Grace and they were so grateful and happy to hear about our donation towards the Warm Home Project. They are hoping to start the work by next March before winter. Expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete. Their response follows:

"Wow – thank you again for delivering such great news today! We are truly blown away at the support received from Port Nicholson Rotary.

We will keep the club informed with regular progress for the project and at the completion of project, we will extend an invitation to all members of your club who wish to join us for a celebration event."

Our last meeting for the year will be held on Monday 17 December at Arabica to acknowledge and thank the cafe owners and staff who have been so supportive and accommodating of members throughout the year. Any donations that would normally come through via a sergeant’s session will be passed onto the staff as a collective tip before we leave.

Our first meeting in 2019 will be an informal breakfast meeting on Wednesday 23 January (venue to be confirmed).

Where are tomorrow’s Rotarians?

The best way to plan for the future is to take stock of where we are.

Earth’s population rises by 2 million roughly every 9 days. The world around us is changing at a rapid pace.  Technology is changing even faster – it’s on steroids! There are major shifts in where and how people works.  Let’s use it to ATTRACT – JOIN – ENGAGE.

Down under, in our part of the world, we need more runs on the board. Traditional clubs are struggling with technology and new systems. There are too many outdated meeting models producing the same results. We need a turnaround in direction.

Most Rotarians are aged between 50 and 69. Most, 79%, are male with 21% female.  Members will join for a reason – it’s not the meal. Why do members leave? 31% because its too expensive or takes too much time; 21% because of the club environment; 15% because of unmet expectations. Of those who leave, 46% would NOT recommend their club and 35% would NOT recommend Rotary.

Who will join us?

·         We need to unlock peoples passion to give purpose;

·         They will probably be project/cause driven;

·         Future members will be extremely mobile;

·         We need to consider Emotional Connecting for the future; leverage partnerships and sponsorships will be important

For the future:

·         Make better use of our information and data

·         Invite younger members to champion the cause

·         Let’s not just talk about diversity

·         Sell the benefits NOT the features

·         New Rotary Clubs are on the way

·         Change the mind-set

Some Tony put to us:

·         Is your club up for the challenge?

·         Have you got a plan?

·         What does your plan look like?

·         Are you ready for the new Rotarian?

·         What does this all mean to you?
