There will be no Wednesday meeting this week, as our annual Goal Setters Award Breakfast will be held on Thursday morning at The Banquet Hall at Parliament, with Paula Tesoriero, New Zealand's Disability Rights Commissoner, the guest speaker.
The Club will present three or more students with monetary awards presented to outstanding students who have shown they can set and achieve goals, have faced significant challenges in their lives and have given service to their community.
Only 50% of the club has registered so far, it would be great to have more though. You might still be in with a chance to get a last minute ticket for $60 if you contact Richard and ask nicely.
On Sunday 4 September, a Steam train will be departing Paekakariki on a return trip to Taihape. The train will stop at various locales en route if you'd like to hop off. A meal can be purchased between Palmerston North and Taihape. Tickets are $160pp and can be booked here. Get in quick, as these events often sell out!
See Joy for more info, and if you would like to sit as a group.
Time flies when you're reading good stuff!! Our book club will be meeting again at the Wellington Club, 5.30pm to 7.00pm on 10 August. This month discussions will centre around books written by female authors.

When it comes to building a business, Ralph shows us how persistence, capital, good ideas, good contacts and even more importantly, even more persistence is essential to success. Ralph is the CEO of Lifetime Retirement Trust.
Ralph has also been the Chief Executive of both ACC and AXA, the GM Marketing and Strategy for Tower Insurance and Marketing Director at Jardine Fleming. He spoke to our Club about "The Trials and Tribulations of Commercial Innovation".
About one in four world plant species are endangered, creating urgency to preserve and find artificial ways to protect them. This was the sobering message from Karin Van Der Walt, Conservation and Science Advisor for the Wellington City Council at Wellington's much loved Otari Botanical Gardens.
David Barnes reports.
What can we do? Karin specified that the team always need volunteers, and money for new scientific equipment, as WCC do not see this as part of their remit.
Please reply to the editors with your ideas and if you would like to be a part of our Club supporting Karin, Otari Bush and their mission
It was distressing this week to hear the upsurge of polio cases, since Covid diminished the ability to keep on top of it. Having reduced the cases to a handful in 3 countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan pre-Covid, by October 2020, the rise had begun.
There were more than 200 cases of wild polio and nearly 600 cases of the vaccine-derived form of the disease. These ‘rogue’ strains of polio are also turning up across much of sub-Saharan Africa, Yemen, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Our District’s fundraising Polio Steam Train trip from Paekakariki to Taihape and back on 4 September is a fun and lucrative way of making a contribution. Thanks to Joy for being our point of contact for this.
Meantime, we look forward to hearing the Guest Speaker, Paula Tesoriero, New Zealand’s Disability Rights Commissioner and Paralympian Cycling Gold Medalist and the inspiring journeys and achievements of our latest cohort of Goal Setters, at Parliament on Thursday this week. There are still tickets available, so please do book now if you haven’t already. Thank you to Richard in particular for the coordination of this. Look forward to seeing you there.
The future looks good!

The Four-Way Test
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
