Colonial Knob and lunch at Kai Tahi or Abandoned Brewery 1 June 2025 9.30 start Yes the Perambulators are getting out and about again! This time we are going to head up Colonial Knob, meeting at the carpark next to Camp Elsdon at 9.30am on Sunday 1 June for a hike right up to the top - if the weather permits, and then back down through the forest. After our hike we will dirve to Kai Tahi - a new eating and retail space in Porirua where you can choose from a variety of foods and the sit together and eat. If we felt like it we could have a beer at Abandoned Brewery - which is right next door and they also have a food cart outside which we could use for lunch - we will make the decision on the day :) There is plenty of parking in the car park by camp Elsdon or on the road beside it. You will need hiking boots and for those who have them, poles. Bring a drink of water, a snack and jackets as it can be windy at the top and the weather can change. The views are spectacular. great for those who like to take photos. Please respond by Friday 30 May so I know how many to expect. Friends and family are most welcome! Looking forward to joining you for a good hike! Lou |

The speaker for this week is Te Rina Leonard Tumu Whakarae Chief Executive Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Correspondence School) Her topic is "Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, the work we do, the impact we make and the many challenges we face." Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand’s state distance education provider, offering a wide range of programmes from early childhood through to NCEA Level 3. With well over 28,000 enrolments a year, we are strongly connected to many diverse communities throughout New Zealand. We have full-time, young adult and adult learners, and we provide dual tuition to ākonga enrolled with other education providers. The Correspondence School was set up in 1922 to provide education at primary school level for what was originally thought would be about 25 ākonga living in remote districts. It quickly grew within weeks to about 100 and by the end of the year there were 347 students. In 1929, it expanded to cater for secondary school ākonga. Since then, the school has continued to grow and develop to meet the changing demands placed on it as its role in the education sector has evolved. In 2009, after a period of consultation with kaimahi, we introduced the school’s current name ‒ Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, which refers to connecting ākonga with learning. Te Rina Leonard (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Raukawa) was appointed as the Chief Executive in 2023. Te Rina first came to Te Kura in 2008 for two years as Deputy Chief Executive Design and Quality, and returned eight years later to become the Deputy Chief Executive Learning Delivery. Te Rina has strengths in leadership and a great commitment and passion for improving opportunities for ākonga and Māori. She is determinied to maintain the momentum and progress built by her predecessor, Mike Hollings, who led the school for 17 years. After qualifying as an Educational Psychologist, Leonard went on to successfully lead large operational, evaluation and policy teams in education. She has also worked in education policy and evaluation at the Education Review Office. The speaker for this week is Dave Shoemack About GoodNature. They knew that taking the world rodent-free would require something way smarter, and way kinder. They started in the remote New Zealand bush, brainstorming 50 ways to kill a rat, then put them to the test in some of the harshest, coldest, wettest and wildest places on the planet. Since then they grown to a team of more than 60 nature-loving Goodnaturists and shipped almost half a million traps to the world. They have revolutionised the way homeowners, farmers, businesses and conservationists deal with rats, mice and other invasive species. GoodNature won the recent Wellington Gold Awards and Goodnature were listed in the Fast Company list of 2025's most innovative companies.

After many requests we are going back to 187 Bar in the City This is Hadleigh Pethericks bar, and it has had great reviews since he took it over. We have been there before but I have had a number of people asking to go back again - so here we go!!! The bar has a great range of craft beer - particuarly Garage Project, as well as a good wine selection and expertly curated cocktails. Since we were there last the range of food has increased and we can look forward to a leisurely lunch in a bar with great vibes. A couple of things to note:
Remember to bring along friends and family - please register them so Hadleigh know how many he has coming. Looking forward to seeing you there. Many of us will be back from holiday then, so it wll be great to get together again
