Perambulators at Ohakune
May 26, 2023 - May 28, 2023

We are arranging a weekend trip to Ohakune, under Noel's expert guidance, from Friday 26 May to Sunday 28 May.  We need to gauge interest now to enable us to look at accommodation options so we can try to get us all into 1 place.

Why May?
May is late Autumn and weather does tend to be settled??
It avoids the onset of spring which can still have lingering winter conditions.

Draft Itinerary;

Friday 26 May - assemble in Ohakune - short walk in pm - Waitonga Falls - start 11km up Mountain Road - approx 2 hour walk to the falls
Dinner at local restaurant.

Saturday 27 May - Kune Shuttle- Ohakune to Horopito departing 27 Goldfinch Street @ 9:00am ($15). Walk 15km - approx 4 hours 30 minutes back to Ohakune
Dinner at local restaurant

Sunday 28 - there are a number of other shorter walks around Ohakune and Raetihi (interesting old town) in the am for those returning to Wellington.

Ski season will not have started (if it ever does) so accommodation should be OK.

Search: Ohakune Old Coach Road - DoC
https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/ohakune-old-coach-road/

Ohakune is approximately 3.5 hours by road from Wellington

If you are interested please register now so we can put things in place.

Rotary Meeting 31 May 2023
May 31, 2023 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM

31 May Meeting at the Wellington Club

Speaker: Guy Ryan

Guy will be bringing new CEO, Devon Murphy-Davids as a guest

Guy Ryan founded Inspiring Stories in 2011. Guy is an Edmund Hillary Fellow, and was awarded Young New Zealander of the Year in 2015. Guy has led Inspiring Stories since inception, including the development of our big Festival for the Future, the Future Leaders programme, The Impact Awards, and Inspiring Speakers.

Guy will be talking to us on "Providing a platform to promote young people doing great things"

Guy grew up in Granity – a tiny town on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. After finishing High School his passion for adventure and surfing took him to Otago University, where he completed a double degree in Commerce and Design, and then a Masters in Science Communication. It was at University he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship – from trying to build tech company, to creating an adventure festival, to co-founding a film production company and winning international awards for filmmaking.
In 2010 he co-directed and produced a film called Carving the Future, a 25-minute documentary about four young New Zealanders taking action on climate change and environmental issues. The film won Platinum Best Film at the Colorado International Film Festival, was one of three finalists in the world for the BBC’s Best Newcomer Award, and was a finalist for Best New Zealand Film at Reel Earth.
Building on the lessons of previous ventures and the success of the film Carving the Future, Guy founded Inspiring Stories in 2011, initially winning a ‘World of Difference’ scholarship from the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation. The next few years would become a whirlwind adventure of developing and testing programmes, partnerships, and building the organisation into the phenomenal force it is today.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeeting.

Tree Planting with Friends of Tawa's Bush
Jun 04, 2023 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Let’s plant trees to help our planet!  Sunday 4 June 1pm

I hope you can join us for our annual tree planting on Sunday 4 June at 1.00pm.  The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson has teamed up with The Friends of Tawa's Bush Reserves for the sixth year in a row to plant trees in the Forest of Tawa, on the western ridgeline of Tawa.  We will meet at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) at the entrance gate to the Spicer Landfill by 1pm.

Our goal is to build on what we have done in the last five years – over 2400 trees in total!  We will continue planting native trees in Tawa to regenerate our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, to make lovely walking areas for us all to enjoy, and to help slow down climate change.  This is open to everyone including family and friends so please invite lots of people to help.  Interact and Rotaract members are very welcome to join us so please let them know about this opportunity.

Tree planting is for everyone.  You don’t have to be super fit to join us.  There are several jobs to choose from or you could do some of each such as:  digging holes; planting trees, setting out trees for planting, picking up the tree packets for reusing, and / or contributing to the afternoon tea.  There are lots of ways to contribute and everybody is welcome to come along.

If you would like to take part, please accept this invitation and provide your contact phone number and email address.  I am coordinating the Club’s participation and can be reached on 021 265 6220 or email landm.king@xtra.co.nz

If you’re joining us for the tree planting here are the details:

  • The planting this year will be at the top of Forest of Tawa, on the western ridgeline of Tawa.
  • We will meet at the Spicier botanical park at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) and at the entrance gate to the Spicier landfill by 1pm.  Vehicles can then travel in convoy through the locked gates of the Meridian Road up through the landfill to the top of the ridge line and the parking area.
  • If anyone is coming via public transport then please contact me (Lisa King -0212656220) and I will find someone to pick you up and drive you to the planting site
  • There is no water on the ridge-line so please bring plenty with you
  • There are no toilets near the planting site – there are public toilets in Tawa at the Grassless park at 11 Luckie Street Tawa just a minute from the main road that you could stop at on your way to Broken Hill Road
  • At the planting site we will start with a brief introduction, health and safety talk and planting demonstration on the site when most have arrived so it would be good if we can all get there ready to start on site at 1.00pm.
  • Please bring your own spade and gardening gloves.  If you don’t have a spade feel free to borrow one from a friend or you could help with planting instead.  If you have a spare spade(s), please bring it along as not everyone will have one.  I have one spare spade and spare gloves which I will bring.
  • Wear clothing appropriate to the weather.
  • I’ll coordinate afternoon tea.  If you’d like to contribute to the afternoon tea please let me know.
  • I’ll contact you if the weather on the day is unsuitable for planting and we will reschedule.  Please enter your mobile phone number when you accept this invitation so I can reach you easily.  Our postponement date will be Sunday 11 April – hopefully we won’t need it
  • Let’s aim to at least match our previous efforts and plant another 500 trees!
  • If you need to reach me either email me landm.king@xtra.co.nz and/or text/phone 021 265 6220.

Please register by Wednesday 31 May, so that I can contact you if we need to postphone.

Please register any family and friends in the comments section so I know how many we have attending - all are welcome.

I hope to see you on Sunday 4th June at 1pm.  Thank you.

Ngā mihi

Lisa King

House of Grace Sowing Seeds Fundraising Dinner
Jun 23, 2023 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

House of Grace Fundraising Dinner

Friday 23 June 2023 at 6:30pm

at Silverstream Retreat

https://www.silverstreamretreat.co.nz/

The House of Grace has been a Port Nicholson Rotary preferred charity for some years. We are listed as a major contributor on their website.  This is an additional opportunity for us to show our support for the great work that they do and to learn more about the amazing impact they are having on many young families' lives.

"The event will be held at Silverstream Retreat. It is a two-course buffet dinner including drinks (wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks). The evening starts at 6:30 with dinner served at 7pm. We will have some live music, spot prizes, a few speakers, and will share a video of some residents sharing how living at the House of Grace impacted their lives. There is no charge for the dinner but Guests are invited to make a donation in lieu to support the work House of Grace does to support young mothers.  Donations can be made on the day or by direct debit to House of Grace bank account - see below for details.  We are expecting the night to wrap up by 9:30.

The intention of the night is to look back and celebrate the lives changed since The House of Grace opened 21 years ago, but to also look ahead and give others the privilege to 'sow seeds' to impact future generations.

There is no cost to the dinner, but guests are given the opportunity to give to the House of Grace on the night."

You can find out more about the House of Grace here - https://www.thehouseofgrace.org.nz/

Mike Selvadurai is making up a table representing Port Nicholson so RSVP to let us know if you want to join us.  We will then advise numbers to the House of Grace. I am sure you will be amazed at what they have achieved.  There is plenty of free parking at the venue.  Dietary requirements can be catered for to a reasonable extent, let us know early so we can advise. Contact Mike on 027 231 6119 or Peter on 021 778300.

If you are unable to attend on the night but would like to make a donation to the House of Grace you can do that by making payment to the RCPN Charitable Trust account 03-0502-0407484-00 using your name and HOG as the reference.  Lindsay will ensure that all payments will be transferred to the House of Grace.

You are invited to:

Prima Facie

By Suzie Miller

Directed by Lyndee-Jane Rutherford - Starring Mel Dodge

Presented by Kavanah Productions & BRAVE Theatre

Something has to change.

A one woman play about a criminal defence lawyer who is at the top of her game and loving it: defending, cross-examining and playing the rules of law to win.   She specializes in defending men accused of sexual assault.   But the tables turn when she herself is assaulted and she finds herself at the mercy of the very system which she has dedicated her life to.   Shadows of doubt are illuminated, raising the question of who our legal system is serving?

Turning our courts of law into a different kind of stage, this sharp, witty and gripping show has been a sell-out on the stages of the West End, Broadway and throughout Australia.
