15 March Meeting at the Wellington Club

Speaker: Guy Ryan

Guy Ryan founded Inspiring Stories in 2011. Guy is an Edmund Hillary Fellow, and was awarded Young New Zealander of the Year in 2015. Guy has led Inspiring Stories since inception, including the development of our big Festival for the Future, the Future Leaders programme, The Impact Awards, and Inspiring Speakers.

Guy will be talking to us on "Providing a platform to promote young people doing great things"

Guy grew up in Granity – a tiny town on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. After finishing High School his passion for adventure and surfing took him to Otago University, where he completed a double degree in Commerce and Design, and then a Masters in Science Communication. It was at University he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship – from trying to build tech company, to creating an adventure festival, to co-founding a film production company and winning international awards for filmmaking.

In 2010 he co-directed and produced a film called Carving the Future, a 25-minute documentary about four young New Zealanders taking action on climate change and environmental issues. The film won Platinum Best Film at the Colorado International Film Festival, was one of three finalists in the world for the BBC’s Best Newcomer Award, and was a finalist for Best New Zealand Film at Reel Earth.
Building on the lessons of previous ventures and the success of the film Carving the Future, Guy founded Inspiring Stories in 2011, initially winning a ‘World of Difference’ scholarship from the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation. The next few years would become a whirlwind adventure of developing and testing programmes, partnerships, and building the organisation into the phenomenal force it is today.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeeting.

Perambulators walk the Escarpment
Apr 02, 2023 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

With summer hopefully lingering just a little, considering how much time it took off over December January, it must be time for the Escarpment walk.

Where: Pukerua Bay to Paekākāriki Escarpment Track.

Meet at Pukerua Bay Train Station.

When: Sunday 2 April 2023, leaving 10:00 am

What we are in for:  With Medium grade/effort, experience this stunning walk with its rewarding views. There are some extended ascending flights of steps (required to get said view), and the track is narrow in places with steep drop-offs (required to promote adrenalin). A rough section of track leads walkers on a brief but steep bypass up and beyond a section of the original track which is being repaired. A rope helps walkers over this section.

Please call Ross (021 467737) if doubt exists.

Weather permitting we will set off from Pukerua Bay Railway Station at 10.00 am - there is a scheduled train departing WLG at 0914 getting to Pukerua Bay at 0950 though check for alerts as these services can change at short notice.

Parking is available at Pukerua Bay Train Station if you choose to come by car.

We will enjoy one of the cafes at Paekakariki before returning to Pukerua Bay by train (which depart every 30 mins).

RSVP no later than Friday night 31 March 2023

If coming please include your mobile number with the registration.

Also please put next of kin/phone a friend name and contact number in the comments box. We need this in the unlikely event of an incident arising.

Ensure you are prepared for changes in the weather so rain jacket and warm layers are essential. Bring water as there is none on the track.

Check out the links below for more information on the track and some of its history:

Note that dogs are NOT allowed on this track.

This month's theme is autobiography. So bring along your favourite book/memoir. Could be about you!
I'm reading the latest biography on Agatha Christie. It's a terrific read and explores her autobiography.

Last month we covered Sport writing. Bill's book on the history of cricket and the creation of the Basin Reserve was the standout book. We will repeat sport as a theme in spring for those of us who failed to conquer the topic.
A list of recommended books will be printed in the next newsletter.

Flashback Friday Baylands Brewery
Apr 14, 2023 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

BAYLAND BREWERY AND TAPROOM

22 Victoria Street

Petone

Here's a brewery that we haven't tried before, so I thought I'd give you a bit of its history.

Baylands was started back in 2012 as a small brewery based on Baylands Drive in Newlands, Wellington.  The brewery was in a double garage under the house with a 300L system but quickly outgrew that space and moved to Petone in 2014 with a 1200L brewery.

The first Baylands beer was launched at Goldings Free Dive, a popular freehouse dive bar in Wellington in May 2013 and it's been full steam ahead since then.

We now have a 2500L brewery in the heart of vibrant Petone with a large tasting room with 30+ taps of beer, wine, spirits and great bbq style burger & taco menu.

To get there:

Take the train from Wellington Station to Petone Station - dont forget to use your Gold card for a free ride smiley

Cross the road and walk up Jackson Street to Victoria Street.

Turn right and Baylands Brewery is just down the road after you cross Union Street.  It's a 9 minute flat walk wink

Lets meet there at 12 o'clock for a long leisurely Friday lunch.

Please RSVP by Wednesday 12 April 5pm so I can indicate numbers attending to the owners.

If you find at the last minute that you can join us, please come along we would love to see you, your friends and family - all are welcome, please let me know in your RSVP if you are bringing others :)

Hope the beer is delicious, as well as the food!!!

Cheers

Louise

Perambulators Overnight Remutaka Forest Park
Apr 26, 2023 9:30 AM - Apr 27, 2023 3:00 PM

Perambulators Gourment Dinner and Overnight Trek to Turere Lodge

Following discussions between some of the old hands we have booked 16 beds at the Turere Lodge for the night of Wednesday 26 April 2023.  The lodge is approximately 2.5 hours walk from the carpark at the Catchpool Valley entrance to Remutaka Forest Park, off the Wainuiomata Coast Road. It can get really wet in here so you need to be prepared with good wet weather gear and warm clothes suitable for NZ back country tramping. Of course it can get really warm as well so also pack sun block and sunhats.

We are planning to have a 3 to 4 course gourmet dinner including wines and your beverage of choice.  Everything will be carried in, including pots and pans and eating utensils, and everyone will be sharing in the menu, the preparation, the carrying in and the fun.  There may be a card game or two.  More details once we know exact numbers.

We will walk in via the Catchpool Loop and Orongorongo Tracks.  There may be some who choose to take a different and longer route out, but otherwise the way out is the same as you come in. See the map.

For information on the Remutaka forest Park and the track in see:

https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/parks-and-recreation/places-to-visit/wellington/rimutaka-fp-brochure.pdf

For information about the Lodge see:

https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/wellington-kapiti/places/remutaka-forest-park/things-to-do/huts/turere-lodge/

We have done this a couple of times before and despite the first time being torrential rain all night and a very exhilarating river crossing in the morning, they were both really good nights. We are not crossing the river this tme.

Spaces are obviously limited so if you are interesed register now.  We will hold a meeting after Rotary in a couple of weeks to go through more details.  Packing lists are available if you are not sure what to bring - generally shampoo, hair curlers  and makup are not required.

Those that have already agreed to go have been registered and should have received confirmation.  If not let me know.

As always if you have any questions just ask.

Tree Planting with Friends of Tawa's Bush
Jun 04, 2023 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Let’s plant trees to help our planet!  Sunday 4 June 1pm

I hope you can join us for our annual tree planting on Sunday 4 June at 1.00pm.  The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson has teamed up with The Friends of Tawa's Bush Reserves for the sixth year in a row to plant trees in the Forest of Tawa, on the western ridgeline of Tawa.  We will meet at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) at the entrance gate to the Spicer Landfill by 1pm.

Our goal is to build on what we have done in the last five years – over 2400 trees in total!  We will continue planting native trees in Tawa to regenerate our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, to make lovely walking areas for us all to enjoy, and to help slow down climate change.  This is open to everyone including family and friends so please invite lots of people to help.  Interact and Rotaract members are very welcome to join us so please let them know about this opportunity.

Tree planting is for everyone.  You don’t have to be super fit to join us.  There are several jobs to choose from or you could do some of each such as:  digging holes; planting trees, setting out trees for planting, picking up the tree packets for reusing, and / or contributing to the afternoon tea.  There are lots of ways to contribute and everybody is welcome to come along.

If you would like to take part, please accept this invitation and provide your contact phone number and email address.  I am coordinating the Club’s participation and can be reached on 021 265 6220 or email landm.king@xtra.co.nz

If you’re joining us for the tree planting here are the details:

  • The planting this year will be at the top of Forest of Tawa, on the western ridgeline of Tawa.
  • We will meet at the Spicier botanical park at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) and at the entrance gate to the Spicier landfill by 1pm.  Vehicles can then travel in convoy through the locked gates of the Meridian Road up through the landfill to the top of the ridge line and the parking area.
  • If anyone is coming via public transport then please contact me (Lisa King -0212656220) and I will find someone to pick you up and drive you to the planting site
  • There is no water on the ridge-line so please bring plenty with you
  • There are no toilets near the planting site – there are public toilets in Tawa at the Grassless park at 11 Luckie Street Tawa just a minute from the main road that you could stop at on your way to Broken Hill Road
  • At the planting site we will start with a brief introduction, health and safety talk and planting demonstration on the site when most have arrived so it would be good if we can all get there ready to start on site at 1.00pm.
  • Please bring your own spade and gardening gloves.  If you don’t have a spade feel free to borrow one from a friend or you could help with planting instead.  If you have a spare spade(s), please bring it along as not everyone will have one.  I have one spare spade and spare gloves which I will bring.
  • Wear clothing appropriate to the weather.
  • I’ll coordinate afternoon tea.  If you’d like to contribute to the afternoon tea please let me know.
  • I’ll contact you if the weather on the day is unsuitable for planting and we will reschedule.  Please enter your mobile phone number when you accept this invitation so I can reach you easily.  Our postponement date will be Sunday 11 April – hopefully we won’t need it
  • Let’s aim to at least match our previous efforts and plant another 500 trees!
  • If you need to reach me either email me landm.king@xtra.co.nz and/or text/phone 021 265 6220.

Please register by Wednesday 31 May, so that I can contact you if we need to postphone.

Please register any family and friends in the comments section so I know how many we have attending - all are welcome.

I hope to see you on Sunday 4th June at 1pm.  Thank you.

Ngā mihi

Lisa King
