Feb 26, 2023 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
At last weeks meeting I proposed the Perambulators do the Patuna Chasm walk next year.
This walk is on private property and goes through an amazing river chasm. The property is 20 minutes out of Martinborough and the walk takes 3 hours. For a good part of the walk you are walking through the river.
Look at the link below for further details.
https://www.patunafarm.co.nz/#chasmwalks
The cost to do the walk is $42 per person and it needs to be booked well in advance.
I am proposing that we look at either Sunday 26 February or Sunday 12 March. Currently there is availability on both dates for a group of 20 people. The 26 February date would require a start time of 9.30am, however the 12 March date would allow a later starting time of 10.30am.
As bookings are required to be made online with payment in advance, I require a firm commitment from you if you want to go.
The first option for 26 February would require participants to leave Wellington no later than 7.30am to be ready to start the trip from Patuna Farm at 9.30am. Google maps shows it as 97.7km from Wellington Railway Station with a travel time of 1 hour 31 minutes.
If you would like to join us in February please register yourself and any guests. I will do the registrations with Patuna Farms in bulk.. Registration will commit you to payment of $42 per person and in the event of cancellation will be subject to the rules set out on the Patuna Chasm site.
If you cannot make 26 February and/or prefer 12 March please advise in the comments section. If there is enough interest we may be able to organise another event.
As the current availability may change quickly I require responses no later than 7pm Wednesday 30 November.

With summer hopefully lingering just a little, considering how much time it took off over December January, it must be time for the Escarpment walk. Where: Pukerua Bay to Paekākāriki Escarpment Track. Meet at Pukerua Bay Train Station. When: Sunday 2 April 2023, leaving 10:00 am What we are in for: With Medium grade/effort, experience this stunning walk with its rewarding views. There are some extended ascending flights of steps (required to get said view), and the track is narrow in places with steep drop-offs (required to promote adrenalin). A rough section of track leads walkers on a brief but steep bypass up and beyond a section of the original track which is being repaired. A rope helps walkers over this section. Please call Ross (021 467737) if doubt exists. Weather permitting we will set off from Pukerua Bay Railway Station at 10.00 am - there is a scheduled train departing WLG at 0914 getting to Pukerua Bay at 0950 though check for alerts as these services can change at short notice. Parking is available at Pukerua Bay Train Station if you choose to come by car. We will enjoy one of the cafes at Paekakariki before returning to Pukerua Bay by train (which depart every 30 mins). RSVP no later than Friday night 31 March 2023 If coming please include your mobile number with the registration. Also please put next of kin/phone a friend name and contact number in the comments box. We need this in the unlikely event of an incident arising. Ensure you are prepared for changes in the weather so rain jacket and warm layers are essential. Bring water as there is none on the track. Check out the links below for more information on the track and some of its history: Note that dogs are NOT allowed on this track. https://www.wellingtonregionaltrails.com/guides/escarpment-track-a-slice-of-stunning-windswept-coastline/ https://www.wellingtonregionaltrails.com/trails/escarpment-track/

This month's theme is autobiography. So bring along your favourite book/memoir. Could be about you!
I'm reading the latest biography on Agatha Christie. It's a terrific read and explores her autobiography.
Last month we covered Sport writing. Bill's book on the history of cricket and the creation of the Basin Reserve was the standout book. We will repeat sport as a theme in spring for those of us who failed to conquer the topic.
A list of recommended books will be printed in the next newsletter.

BAYLAND BREWERY AND TAPROOM 22 Victoria Street Petone Here's a brewery that we haven't tried before, so I thought I'd give you a bit of its history. Baylands was started back in 2012 as a small brewery based on Baylands Drive in Newlands, Wellington. The brewery was in a double garage under the house with a 300L system but quickly outgrew that space and moved to Petone in 2014 with a 1200L brewery. The first Baylands beer was launched at Goldings Free Dive, a popular freehouse dive bar in Wellington in May 2013 and it's been full steam ahead since then. We now have a 2500L brewery in the heart of vibrant Petone with a large tasting room with 30+ taps of beer, wine, spirits and great bbq style burger & taco menu. To get there: Take the train from Wellington Station to Petone Station - dont forget to use your Gold card for a free ride Cross the road and walk up Jackson Street to Victoria Street. Turn right and Baylands Brewery is just down the road after you cross Union Street. It's a 9 minute flat walk Lets meet there at 12 o'clock for a long leisurely Friday lunch. Please RSVP by Wednesday 12 April 5pm so I can indicate numbers attending to the owners. If you find at the last minute that you can join us, please come along we would love to see you, your friends and family - all are welcome, please let me know in your RSVP if you are bringing others :) Hope the beer is delicious, as well as the food!!! Perambulators Gourment Dinner and Overnight Trek to Turere Lodge Following discussions between some of the old hands we have booked 16 beds at the Turere Lodge for the night of Wednesday 26 April 2023. The lodge is approximately 2.5 hours walk from the carpark at the Catchpool Valley entrance to Remutaka Forest Park, off the Wainuiomata Coast Road. It can get really wet in here so you need to be prepared with good wet weather gear and warm clothes suitable for NZ back country tramping. Of course it can get really warm as well so also pack sun block and sunhats. We are planning to have a 3 to 4 course gourmet dinner including wines and your beverage of choice. Everything will be carried in, including pots and pans and eating utensils, and everyone will be sharing in the menu, the preparation, the carrying in and the fun. There may be a card game or two. More details once we know exact numbers. We will walk in via the Catchpool Loop and Orongorongo Tracks. There may be some who choose to take a different and longer route out, but otherwise the way out is the same as you come in. See the map. For information on the Remutaka forest Park and the track in see: https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/parks-and-recreation/places-to-visit/wellington/rimutaka-fp-brochure.pdf For information about the Lodge see: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/wellington-kapiti/places/remutaka-forest-park/things-to-do/huts/turere-lodge/ We have done this a couple of times before and despite the first time being torrential rain all night and a very exhilarating river crossing in the morning, they were both really good nights. We are not crossing the river this tme. Spaces are obviously limited so if you are interesed register now. We will hold a meeting after Rotary in a couple of weeks to go through more details. Packing lists are available if you are not sure what to bring - generally shampoo, hair curlers and makup are not required. Those that have already agreed to go have been registered and should have received confirmation. If not let me know. As always if you have any questions just ask. |

House of Grace Fundraising DinnerFriday 23 June 2023 at 6:30pmat Silverstream Retreathttps://www.silverstreamretreat.co.nz/The House of Grace has been a Port Nicholson Rotary preferred charity for some years. We are listed as a major contributor on their website. This is an additional opportunity for us to show our support for the great work that they do and to learn more about the amazing impact they are having on many young families' lives.
"The event will be held at Silverstream Retreat. It is a two-course buffet dinner including drinks (wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks). The evening starts at 6:30 with dinner served at 7pm. We will have some live music, spot prizes, a few speakers, and will share a video of some residents sharing how living at the House of Grace impacted their lives. There is no charge for the dinner but Guests are invited to make a donation in lieu to support the work House of Grace does to support young mothers. Donations can be made on the day or by direct debit to House of Grace bank account - see below for details. We are expecting the night to wrap up by 9:30.
The intention of the night is to look back and celebrate the lives changed since The House of Grace opened 21 years ago, but to also look ahead and give others the privilege to 'sow seeds' to impact future generations.
There is no cost to the dinner, but guests are given the opportunity to give to the House of Grace on the night."

Jun 25, 2023 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
We will gather at our house (47 Homewood Ave, Karori) and leave and return from there. Sheryn and I completed the walk last week and it takes about two and a half hours. Starting at our house, we climb for about 45 minutes and then head down to the 800 year old Rimu. From there we take a track around Otari to Karori Cemetery and home.
The walk is approximately 7.5kms and the route is of medium intensity, with stairs and plenty of roots along the way. We would suggest boots are an essential and walking poles highly advised.
When we have all returned we will have coffee/tea/pastries etc at our house (if you would like to contribute bakery items it would be welcome)
If you would like to join us, please respond to me at davidianshack@gmail.com

28 June 2023 Meeting at the Wellington Club SPEAKER: Deirdre Tarrant This will be the first meeting with our new Club President Tony Robinson at the helm. Join us to welcome him into his new position, have a delicious breakfast and listen to our speaker Deirdre. Her bio is as follows: Deirdre Tarrant is the name all Wellingtonians associate with dance – whether it was as a student attending the famous Cuba St Dance studios or participating in the School’s Arts splash, or through watching her students perform at Chinese New Year or at the Christmas Parade. Deirdre Tarrant has made dance accessible and fun to Wellingtonians for generations. Born and bred in Wellington, Deirdre danced with the New Zealand ballet company 1963-1965 while she was completing a BA at Victoria University. After finishing her degree, she left NZ to dance in London. On her return, Deirdre established Tarrant Dance Studios in the heart of Wellington’s busy central shopping district. RAD member since 1960, Deirdre was also a vocational Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance for over 30 years. In 1985, Deirdre established Footnote New Zealand Dance – one of very few ongoing professional dance companies in NZ and its longest running contemporary company. As Director for 25 years, Deirdre grew the company to one that not only performs internationally but is also known for creating and commissioning bold new work by NZ artists. Deirdre has always sought and created opportunities for a wide range of artists and innovators, New Zealand choreographers and composers and established Choreolab for that purpose. Choreolab is an important annual event in the Wellington dance calendar and provides an opportunity for graduate dancers to participate in three weeks of classes and workshops with experienced dancers and choreographers, as well as introducing them to other aspects of the profession through talks by composers, representatives of the funding bodies and creators in other sectors of the performing arts. Deirdre has always been a strong supporter of the RAD. She was instrumental in the fundraising for the Genée in 2012 and is a founding member and Chair for RAD NZ’s scholarship programme – the 14+ Dance Scholarship Foundation – since its inception in 2002. Deirdre was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for ‘services to dance and the community’ and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013 for ‘services to contemporary dance’. She was one of the first Distinguished Alumni to be appointed by the Victoria University of Wellington in 2006, and was awarded a Wellington Council person of year Absolutely Positively Award in 2012.
