Mar 03, 2020 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Come along for the first social event of the year. Numbers are tight, so I will need confirmation by Friday this week. It will cost $42pp. Bring your partner/spouse Astronomy on Tap @ Carter Observatory Tuesday night out! There are so many puns we could put together on why you could have a drink and nibbles at Space Place…are there stars in your eyes, come join a stellar audience, what’s written in the stars…OK we’ll stop now. Astronomy on Tap is the perfect way to spend a night out getting amongst the stars with a date, mate, or flying solo. Enjoy a drink on arrival as part of entry and then sit back and relax in the dark planetarium while presented with the skies above on screen, taking you from Wellington out to the Universe and beyond. This is a great way to leave your earthly troubles behind and learn a little about what is happening above our heads. There are also nibbles to enjoy and the interactive exhibition at Space Place to wander around with another drink from the cash bar. So, spend a night getting to know your night skies with your favourite friends. Places are limited. Space Place, Carter Observatory 8PM Tuesday 3rd March. $42–ticket price includes refreshments and one drink upon arrival. There is a Cash Bar. |

Good afternon everybody. I hope this finds you well and enjoying the benefits of Level 3. There are plenty of local businesses that would welcome your support.
Our Zoom meetings are gaining in popularity. Last week we achieved a 70% turn out, we inducted a new member, welcome Philippa, and Tamaris brought a guest to find out about us.
Join your fellow Rotarians this coming week for an hour of early morning fun and banter. As the meetings are not costing you the normal breakfast fee you may like to make a donation via Buy the Box instead. Just do a direct credit to the Charitable Trust account 03-0502-0407484-00 with your name and BTB as the reference. You can make the donation even if you weren't able to talk to your BTB donation on Zoom. You could also ask the Treasurer to divert part of your member account surplus towards the Charitable Trust or to a specific project e.g. Emergency Response Kits (ERK) for the Pacific. Contact the treasurer - duncan.nicholas@gmail.com
Please reply to this invite so we know who to expect. Some duties still apply so read your bulletin - published on Sunday.

Butterfly Creek, Eastbourne. Organiser - Sheryn Shackleton phone 021 0221 7541 https://www.gw.govt.nz/Butterfly-Creek/ Meet at Muritai Park entrance on Muritai Road, Eastbourne opposite Karamu Street ready to start walking at 9:30am. Map is here: http://www.gw.govt.nz/assets/Parks-and-Recreation/East-Harbour/EHRPNorthbrochuremap2007.pdf We will head up the hill for about 30 minutes where we meet the intersection of all the tracks leading down to Butterfly Creek. The track has a difficulty rating of intermediate. It is fairly steep at first, but the track is level and well groomed. Boots probably a good option, given the wet weather we have had, but not necessary. Alternatively make sure you have sturdy shoes. Even if it is sunny bring some warm clothing and a rain jacket as a precaution.
We’ll head back out and arrive at Heather’s just after noon. Please RSVP by 6pm Friday 26 June if you are coming. Ensure your mobile number is included in the response. Look forward to seeing you. |

Fellow wanderers, following last months Butterfly Creek walk the next adventure is planned for Sunday 26 July, meeting at the ‘Battle Hill Farm Forest Park’ entrance ready for a 0900 start (it is an approx. 30 min drive from town – turn off SH58 at Pauatahanui onto Paekakariki Hill Road and drive 6km to the park entrance).
The Transmission Gully/Puketiro Loop is approx. 10km and should take 3-3.5hrs. The track climbs a hill through the pine plantation to the top where we will get great views of the Pauatahanui Inlet and South Island (clear day assumed). Warm clothing, boots and poles for the steady steepish up/down recommended. You may like to bring a thermos of your favourite hot beverage and a snack to have at the summit, especially if it is a bit nippy.
The all important post walk coffee will be at Groundup Café 15 Paekakariki Hill Road Pauatahanui.
A brief history of the area is attached, and big thank you to Rick and Noel for their company on the reconnaissance trip. Their claim for ‘all care no responsibility’ being naturally dismissed. Please RSVP no later than Friday 24 July. Make sure that you contact details (mobile) are included in your response. Ross. |

Aug 23, 2020 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Sunday 23 August for our next walk to the Centre of New Zealand. This track is no longer open to the Public. Linda has succeeded in gaining permission from the landowner for the Perambulators to cross his land. Another very special trip brought to you by the Perambulator's sub-committee. Don't miss out - you have plenty of time to re-arrange your affairs. This is a there and back track of about 16km total. It is a steady climb for about 2 ½ hours to the plaque that marks the centre of continental New Zealand. Then it is an extra half hour to spectacular views from the summit of Mt Reeves. Return back down the same track. Allow 5-6 hours for the return trip. The start of the track is at the end of Waiohine Valley Road, west of Greytown, and then across farm land. Meet at the Woodside station at 9am and convoy in carpools from there as there is not a lot of parking at the road end and no cell phone coverage. This is about an hour and a quarter drive from Wellington. If anyone wants to come and stay the night at our place at Morisons Bush very near to Greytown, then you are welcome. It would save the early start in the morning. People are welcome to come back to our place afterwards for coffee.
Bring:
https://wairarapanz.com/see- Here is another description of the walk
https://www.ttc.org.nz/pmwiki/
Up: From the car park at the Waiohine Valley road-end on the TR, the route crosses a small culverted stream, follows N along a farm road, and then rises away from the river to a terrace about 15 minutes from the car park. From this first crest of the road, the route is marked by a small green and yellow sign in a paddock behind an electric fence. After a steep 5 minute climb to the paddock’s top, the route enters pines near a large orange triangle. From here, the benched track to Reeves will be picked up leading L. This is the start of the old Greytown - Otaki Tourist Co's track. One hour from the road-end an open top offers a good spot for the first spell at .569. Beyond this, the track drops through a small saddle to enter better bush, then climbs to the track junction near knob .745, another hour on. From .745 the old well-defined pack track climbs gradually through bush, then old burn areas to the summit of Reeves, some 45 minutes distant – less than 3 hours from the road-end. About 15 minutes past the track junction near .745, there is a small cairn marking a 100-year-old camp site, probably used by the original track makers. Five minutes further on is a large plaque marking the centre of New Zealand's Extended Continental Shelf. |
