Club Forum makes important decisions

A lively club forum on Thursday made some important decisions about how the club operates.
The decisions concerned the breakfast, the sergeant’s session, speakers invited to the club and support for Interactors and Rotoractors.
On the breakfast, the meeting supported the board’s recommendation for a three-month trial of a “lighter option” for breakfast; this to be on the last meeting day of each month.
We are yet to discuss the matter with the hotel, but what is envisaged is that there will be a hot egg dish, more fruit, perhaps more cereals, plus yoghurts, continental style cold meats (ham, breakfast salami and the like) plus items like croissants and brioche. We are not expecting the price of breakfast to change.
There was a considerable amount of discussion about the sergeant’s session. It was agreed that the focus should be on having fun, and that it should be short and sharp. The name could also be changed as part of the fresher look for the session, which most members enjoyed and thought was a valuable part of the Rotary experience.
There were very mixed views about having politicians as guest speakers – other than Prime Ministers coming to present significant awards like Goalsetters. (The Club has hosted Prime Ministers Helen Clark, John Key and Bill English in that capacity, and intends to invite the PM again in 2018).
No one wanted politicians who were simply going to laud their own achievements, or to carp about how bad the other lot were. Having interesting and prominent politicians who could be keynote speakers and significant drawcards for the club (to attract a large audience and make some money for club projects) was suggested.
A show of hands indicated that having politicians “occasionally” was ok - “occasionally” meaning up to 2-3 times a year. Having ones with a connection to Wellington or Wellington issues seemed to be preferred.  We have hosted the Mayor and the chair of the Regional Council in recent times.
Finally, the meeting agreed young people – Interactors and Rotoractors – coming to breakfast would be charged $10, while noting that this is not a complete solution to the problem of attracting more younger people into the club.

Living in interesting times
Living in interesting times

This week the club did not have a speaker, but a discussion forum as a result of a recent survey. There were five topics to agree to talk about and make decisions. They were topics which had been raised in the survey by a small number of members. Before the discussions took place, we were told they were definitely not the majority view, but we discussed them anyway.

I think I can safely say the discussions were robust – which is a jargon weasel word for strong disagreements and personal comments. The President’s report will have all the results so I will not duplicate any of this. I hope my impressions will help members who were not there see how it all went.

The first topic was, in theory, a relatively easy one about modifying what the hotel supplies for breakfast. I am biased as I normally eat little or no breakfast. A slice of toast and a cup of coffee is good enough for me so did not need to take part in what was said. The suggestion was that less cooked food was needed and could be replaced with lighter items, along the lines of a continental breakfast. That is how I understood the plan was to be, although I was a bit confounded by the final outcome.

The following items were about the Sergeant’s session and the choice of speakers. Strong debate from an aggrieved few was matched by not much from the majority. Well, this is how I saw it. It was, in my humble assistant, deputy reporter’s opinion, not a good use of club time. I was a bit confused again by the conclusions drawn, and had to ask for clarification as I felt I had been at a different meeting. I thought that having political speakers had not had majority agreement, but I must have not been listening properly.

As we ran a bit late and I had another meeting to attend, I left before fees and club diversity were discussed. I hope it all went better. I was pleased to have an excuse to leave early and hope that future club meetings get back to what works well - good speakers and good fun.

Rotary of the Move
Ideas to Strengthen Our Club
At our recent session John Bishop, our incoming President, encouraged us as member of Port Nicholson to be proud of our association with Rotary.  We have a strong Club but can always improve by attracting new members and with that they comes new ideas and new commitment.  ‘Rotary on the Move’ is circulated widely amongst  Australian and New Zealand Rotarians.  It is a monthly circular that has excellent articles.

One article states:
  • Clubs who are well organised attract members
  • Clubs who communicate well attract members
  • Clubs who develop strategic partnerships attract members
  • Clubs who understand that their 'clients' are their community attract members
  • Clubs who know their demographics attract members
  • Clubs who listen to their members and respond to their interests attract members
  • Clubs who have a great Public Relations /Marketing team attract members
  • Clubs who have effective programs attract members.

New ideas increase our desire to do more for our community through the time we give to serving others.
