President's Message

I got an interesting email from Lisa King on Monday night describing an approach to Rotary in Wellington from the organisation helping sufferers of Alzheimer’s’ disease in our region.

That body is seeking an alliance with Rotary clubs to raise money and awareness, and to promote treatment options and to educate people about the condition. The matter came up at a cluster meeting – which is where a group of clubs meet with an assistant governor to promote co-operation among clubs.

Lisa flicked me an email; I liked what I saw and asked the board whether they would like to consider taking on Alzheimer’s as a cause, and specifically whether we should invite Anne Schumacher, the CEO for Wellington Alzheimer’s to come and tell the club all about it early next year.

Board members promptly replied and supported that initial step.  This doesn’t mean that we are committed to anything more than listening to what Anne Schumacher has to say. One member raised the very reasonable question about whether we are dealing with a national body or just a local group.

However, it did strike me that this was precisely the kind of cause where a group of Rotary clubs can make a difference. It’s a popular cause which the public understand and can readily support. And there is a definite need. A joint commitment by several clubs translates into more bodies on the street for street collections, and success reflects well on Rotary as an organisation (although that is not why we do these things.)

For 2017/18 members voted solidly to support two major charities: the Malaghan Institute and Wellington Free Ambulance, which are to receive the bulk of profits from the auction in early 2018. Whatever view we might take about supporting the Alzheimer’s people, that commitment remains in place.

Further if we are to take on another major charity like Alzheimer’s how it would fit in with our other commitments is a factor we would need to consider.

Your board will have an initial discussion of the issues involved at its next meeting (Monday 18 December). At the moment we are committed to nothing more than inviting Anne Schumacher to a meeting, and we would certainly want to make sure that members want to back this cause before agreeing to do so.  Meantime, I am very happy to hear from any member on the matter. Please just email me.

Please note that the AGM is on Tuesday 28 November 2017 not Wednesday 29th as previously notified by email.
Nick's Talk

It is only logical that Nick Duncan joined the International Fellowship of Rotary. He had Rotary in his veins from the get go..

Nicholas grew up in Christchurch, an "Eighties Kid". He fondly recalls holidays at the family batch in Tekapo, a land rich with Pine Forests to explore, and souvenirs from Horsey Hill. His parents both worked at the University of Canterbury; Kelvin was a Zoologist, most interested in Amphipods (tiny insects) and Averill was in Information Technology. Kelvin was an infamous Seargeant at the Christchurch Rotary Club, and Averill a proud Woman of The Inner Wheel.

A logical thinker from early on, Nicholas wrote his first computer programme when he was in primary school. It looked something like this:

Computer says "WHAT IS YOUR NAME?"
IF human types in "SIMON", THEN Computer says "GO AWAY SIMON"
IF human types in "NICHOLAS", THEN Computer says "HELLO NICHOLAS"

Unsurprisingly, Nicholas won scholarships throughout his academic career, incorporating Christ's College (Christchurch), The University of Canterbury (Undergraduate - Mathematics and Computer Science), The Australian National University (Honours), and finally his PhD at Cambridge University, back at Christ's College! During this time, in addition to striving for (and achieving) academic excellence, he enjoyed Killing As an Organised Sport (KAOS), pub crawls through the rambling English Countryside, and, very occasionally, wearing Cargo Pants.

He still seems to love working with numbers, arrows, brackets, and letters, solving equations and testing for x. He gave the club a crash course on Topos Theory, and then how to ensure a fair coin toss competition. We then learnt how to quickly and simply use RSA encryption over the internet.

According to Nick, now a Software Developer for the Ministry of Defense, "the real good maths" includes prime numbers that are around 500 digits long, and codes that break when one or more parties is being dishonest. This secures our online work, helps our emails to be private, and keeps or country safe.

Our Port Nicholson Christmas is on Wednesday 6 December at the Miramar Golf Club and hopefully lots of us will be there.

This year we are collecting goods to help at the House of Grace in Newlands. Port Nich has been involved with the House of Grace for many years helping them with their great work as a home for pregnant teens - a place to live, learn, prepare for childbirth and make plans for a bright future.

What they really need is help with everyday practical items for the mothers and not the babies. So this means things like supermarket vouchers, toiletries such as shampoo, conditioners, toothpaste, tooth brushes, baby shampoo. And for the House itself as opposed to the mothers the needs are similar with supermarket vouchers which they use to re stock their emergency supplies, and maybe petrol vouchers for their van, cleaning products etc.  Not necessarily the exciting gifts we sometime associate with  Christmas but what they really needed to make a difference.

We will collect items on the night of 6 December and for those who are not going to the Christmas party please bring along items at our meetings in the few weeks beforehand.
