President's Message

Leading the Way

The achievements and the potential of young people were very much on display at this week’s meeting. What a mature and polished group they were in their presentations. And we were in awe also about how active the Interactors had been this year.
As a club we have long had a practice of making the head boy of Wellington College and the head girl of Wellington Girls’ College honorary members of the club, and we have often sought to involve them in club events like the auction and the goalsetters dinner. And in return we have backed their projects like the 40 hour famine and other fundraisers.
However, since we began involved with both a Rotoract Club and an Interact club, the relationship has grown greatly with new challenges and greater benefits for both the club and the young people.
To get younger people along to club meetings more often, the board has agreed to charge them just $10 for the breakfast.  (Obviously, this doesn’t cover the cost, and the balance will be met by the club when settling up with the hotel.) There is no objection to members paying for the students.
The enthusiasm, commitment and achievements of the Interact Club, as reported to us on Wednesday, amply demonstrate the worth of our efforts to support their efforts. They have had a great year, working with the Red Cross and with the refugee community, capped by their Blue Dragons Quiz Night held at the Intercontinental a few weeks ago to raise funds for help fight child trafficking in Vietnam.
More involvement by our people will produce even better results, and more young people attending our meetings more often will enliven the club.
Of course, there are always going to be challenges in the turnover of senior students, and no doubt there will be some rebuilding work at the start of each year.
We were told that the office holders from the previous year - who had now left school -  would go to the first Interact meeting of the new year and help kick start the club under new leadership.
We can help provide continuity. Gillian and Christopher Robertson, with Lisa King, David Shackleton, Nick Duncan and Paula McKnight have been the main people working with the Interactors and they are doing fantastic work. Thank you for your efforts all this year.
----------------
It was such a flat-out morning with the Interactors, the head boy and girl talks, and the presentation from Mike Grant from Wellington Free Ambulance that we had no time for a Sergeant’s Session even though Julian (standing in for Gaylene) had prepared one. I had forgotten he was doing that; my apologies Julian. Still the liveliest meeting for some time ended bang on 8.30, which is just a few minutes over schedule.

Port Nicholson Youth 1 Nov 2017

For those who were unable to attend this Wednesday’s meeting you missed a cracker.

A full house with the average age of members significantly reduced by the impressive line-up of representatives from Interact - Luke Whitehead, Isobel Jaspers and Ella Thorpe, Rotoract - Chelsea Steen Jones and ably lead by Fatuma Mohammed, Head Girl of Wellington Girls College and Thomas Stewart, Head Boy of Wellington College.

Rotary members were engaged and entertained as we were updated on their year of challenges, successes and learnings.

A number of themes emerged as each student stepped up to speak to the activities and events they had organised with their insights the most memorable.

Leadership

Living well, learning about values and leadership, gaining respect, making the best of every endeavour, and growing personally through their experiences in a way that was humble and inspiring. A year full of activities as volunteers, while they juggled study commitments. And as they come to the end of their year turning their minds to how they can build on their successes by coaching and Change guiding new members and exploring ideas about an Interact Council in the future.

‘how a small number of people can transform a place’ (insights after volunteering at Zealandia)

Community and contribution

A genuine interest in serving their community, learning about the struggles of others as they packed parcels for Red Cross, contributed to Youth Line, supported refugees in their community, and made banners for a street appeal and for their club.

getting the most out of unsung work rather than being in the lime-light’ (insights after working in a kitchen supporting refugees)

Team work and connection

Working together, learning what it takes to create memorable events such as the Blue Dragon Quiz Night to raise funds to fight international child trafficking. Here they partnered up with the Intercontinental Hotel, teachers, students, and Rotarians (drum roll Christopher and Gillian) to deliver a highly successful, quality evening, endorsed by members in the room who attended.

And the value of the connection with Port Nic Rotarians, the support that is offered, the linkages with key projects, the food which is always appreciated, and knowing we like them!

‘learning from each other and growing the club’

Summary

If we had a dollar for every time these young New Zealand leaders offered thanks, acknowledgements and gratitude to others we’d have enough to build another house in Fiji.

Our future looked pretty secure from where I sat.

Port Nic Gardeners 2017
Thanks so much to the Port Nic Gardening team for their efforts last Sunday. It was a much smaller team effort this time but the focus was there and we definitely have a happy client in Michelle - our host. She is very happy to have much tidier weed free areas and a nice new lawn. Rotary has delivered again.

Thanks once again...the team deserved a very relaxing afternoon....until next year 😊

Cheers,
Brent

Would you like to become and Earth Angel?

Many will remember a presentation given last year by fellow Rotarian Lance Weller on Angel Flight. Angel Flight NZ is a charity funded by Rotary, Private and Corporate donations. It co-ordinates non-emergency flights, assisting people who are financially disadvantaged with a medical condition and long distances to travel, by flying them to an Airport near their medical treatment facility. One of their Earth Angels will meet every flight and drive the Passenger to their  Medical Appointment. Flight and Road Transport are provided free of charge by their team of Volunteers.

Lance would love to have more Earth Angels (drivers) based  in Wellington.

Earth Angels (the volunteer drivers), are the important link for passengers between their arrival at their destination airfield and their medical appointment. Without them AF could not offer a seamless co-ordinated aircraft/car journey from their home airport to their medical appointment.
Imagine arriving at an unfamiliar airport and trying to find a taxi telephone number and place to make the call, then waiting around for a taxi where you are probably just another passenger, not someone who needs a little extra care and compassion as you deal with your medical condition.
The volunteer drivers donate their time and their car to help those who are facing a challenging medical situation in their lives. The generosity of the volunteer is always very much appreciated by those you are helping.

Process and requirements for Earth Angels:
Earth Angels [ EA] are all sent an email giving details/times of the Mission i.e. Passenger’s age and medical condition. Earth Angels able  to assist reply if able to help with that Mission.
(EA’s not able to help need not reply).

Every Mission is organised by a Mission Coordinator who keeps in constant contact with the Passenger, Pilot and the Earth Angel. Angel Flight is normally given at least 7 days’ notice – sometimes more, sometimes less. Once a month would be a maximum.

Earth Angels need to have a comfortable car, in good condition. Flights will arrive in Wellington or Paraparaumu. Although the ideal scenario is to have one only Earth Angel for the mission, often one will collect the passenger up from the airport and another will  take them back.
Please contact Lance at lance@angelflightnz.co.nz or John Pringle on 021 047 0557 is you’d like to become an Earth Angel.
