Rotary Club or Port Nicholson Bulletin 12 November 2017

President's Message

A much better attendance this week despite its being a Tuesday.  We were pleased to welcome Lindsay Chitty, a vet from Otorohanga who now lives in Seatoun.
Lindsay partly saved the day for us with a good speech off the cuff about stamp collecting, and the international stamp expo he recently attended in Brasilia. That’s the capital of Brazil, a completely planned capital city, which he described as like Canberra, but without that city’s soul.
Also, a pleasant surprise to welcome back Ruth Bray, a stalwart of the club when she lived and worked in Wellington, but now retired and living in Havelock in sunny Marlborough, and back in Wellington only for a short visit. (And Florence Wellington was there too.)
With no guest speaker fronting up, she told us of life in Havelock, where she is actively volunteering in the community and doing good work.
Your board met on Monday night and approved the accounts for the year ending 30 June 2017. These were signed off and will be circulated to members shortly. These will be discussed at the AGM which is set down for Tuesday 28 November.
The notice of meeting says 8am. However, I intend to start the AGM immediately after breakfast. The accounts will be presented by the Treasurer, Gaylene Hughes. She is also down to be sergeant that day. To allow plenty of time for discussion I have agreed with Gaylene that there will be no sergeant’s session that morning.
Members who read the accounts and have questions are encouraged to send them to Gaylene in advance so that she has time to find the answers and give them either directly to the questioner or to answer them on the day.
It is unsatisfactory all round for someone to ask a question on the day and for it not to be answered properly. Hopefully asking in advance will mean that all matters can be properly addressed.
The following week there is no meeting but the Christmas Party is on Wednesday evening, and then the last meeting for the year is scheduled on Wednesday 13 December.

Please note that the AGM is on Tuesday 28 November 2017 not Wednesday 29th as previously notified by email.
Putting a stamp on sailing

This week, although when you read this it will be last week, our organised speaker failed to appear. Naturally we all hoped for an early finish and a relaxing coffee across the road, but this was not to be. We had two excellent substitutes.
The first was Ruth Bray who sailed away from the club into the sunset a couple of years ago. It was good to see her looking so well. Life must be good.
She and Ian explored the Sounds in their boat and then settled in Havelock and eventually bought a house there. The boat is no more, although Ruth admitted to scrounging rides on other boats as there are plenty around in Havelock. She is happily volunteering and enjoying herself and did not seem to miss our company too much – certainly not enough to want to return to Wellington for irregular Tuesday or Wednesday meetings.
The other extra talk was by Lindsay Chitty, a member from Otorohanga who has recently moved to Wellington and is looking for a club to join. Naturally we were on our best behaviour. Lindsay had just returned from a trip to Brazil. He is a keen philatelist and obviously a good one as he told us of a number of medals and prizes he has won with his stamps.
The trip to Brazilia, the capital city, was for a stamp exhibition and Lindsay told us of his trials and tribulations getting there, as well as the enjoyable parts. However, he was there to work, so he did not get to behave as tourists normally would and see many of the sights. He did say that as Brazilia was created as a new city, it did not have the ambience you would get from the older more established cities in South America.
He explained that like many of us, he started collecting stamps when he was a lot younger, but unlike many of us, he has continued with his hobby. He still works part time as a vet, but this gives him more time for his stamps.

Parting thought - John Bishop
John Alexander Smith, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford University gave a message to new students during the early years of the 20th Century –

“Gentlemen –you are now about to embark on a course of studies that will form a noble adventure…..let me make this clear to you…nothing that you will learn in the course of your studies will be of the slightest possible use to you in afterlife – save only this – that if you work hard and intelligently, you should be able to detect when a person is talking rot, and that, in my view, is the main, if not the sole purpose of education.”

Our Port Nicholson Christmas is on Wednesday 6 December at the Miramar Golf Club and hopefully lots of us will be there.

This year we are collecting goods to help at the House of Grace in Newlands. Port Nich has been involved with the House of Grace for many years helping them with their great work as a home for pregnant teens - a place to live, learn, prepare for childbirth and make plans for a bright future.

What they really need is help with everyday practical items for the mothers and not the babies. So this means things like supermarket vouchers, toiletries such as shampoo, conditioners, toothpaste, tooth brushes, baby shampoo. And for the House itself as opposed to the mothers the needs are similar with supermarket vouchers which they use to re stock their emergency supplies, and maybe petrol vouchers for their van, cleaning products etc.  Not necessarily the exciting gifts we sometime associate with  Christmas but what they really needed to make a difference.

We will collect items on the night of 6 December and for those who are not going to the Christmas party please bring along items at our meetings in the few weeks beforehand.
